The photo is from local pilot Vlad Oustimovitch, taken the first time he flew a newly labeled departure route announced by the Federal Aviation Adeministration earlier this month for pilots using Visual Flight Rules while arriving at and departing from Boeing Field (officially King County International Airport) just east of West Seattle. (In the photo, that’s Alki Point toward the top, Schmitz Park near the bottom.)

He tipped us to the changes: The FAA says it canceled two previous routes and replaced them with “newly defined” routes, though its announcement and King County’s FYI stress that “The new routes follow existing air traffic flight tracks that are assigned by BFI ATCT [air-traffic-control tower] and no new areas will experience new air traffic overflights. The new VFR arrival and departure routes do not introduce air traffic to any new areas.”

The FAA says the changes were made to increase safety “by increasing separation between arrival and departure flows into (Boeing Field), Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and Renton Municipal Airport.” The FAA says this is necessary because there have been some “Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) events involving VFR aircraft arriving and departing [Boeing Field].” To see the newly labeled arrival/departure routes, scroll through this FAA document below (or here):

Each route is labeled with the number of aircraft expected to use it daily. Oustimovitch says the main change he noticed was the addition of an Alki Point departure route, as shown in his photo above; he also sent this document that included the old routes.

Again, this change – which took effect two weeks ago – isn’t supposed to result in air traffic anywhere that you didn’t see or hear it before. But if you think you’re experiencing noise related to Boeing Field flights, here’s how to report that.

Thanks to everyone who sends info if and when they find dumped-and-likely-stolen items, from bicycles to backpacks to mementos. There are reunions – like this one. The finder in this case wasn’t a WSB reader,, but when she told someone what she had found and that she hoped to get it back to whoever was missing it, WSB was suggested. After we published her report and photos – finding a bin of keepsakes and documents near West Seattle Stadium/Golf Course after she had visited to coach at a track meet – some readers found an obituary that almost certainly was related. One of the people named as survivors contacted us Friday, and we forwarded his info to finder Karen, who emailed this morning to report: “Success!! I called Harry Pierce yesterday and he picked up the bin last night. Their shed had been broken into and this was one of the items stolen. He was very grateful, as the memorabilia was irreplaceable.”

The King County Assessor’s Office says two more areas of West Seattle will get property-valuation notices soon. These are valuations as of January 1st of this year, which will be used for the tax bills that property owners will get next year. The Assessor’s Office announcement says, “Median residential property values rose by 9.2% in Fauntleroy, and by 8% in North Central West Seattle,” adding, “Data indicates that home sale prices and overall home values have risen sharply in most King County neighborhoods, despite the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. No one knew what to expect a little over a year ago when this public health emergency began. Now it is clear that a primary impact on property values has been caused by homeowners not wanting to sell at this time, leading to reduced supply and big price and value increases.” (You don’t have to wait for the postcard to arrive by mail – if your new valuation has been finalized, it’ll show up online; one way to look it up is to use the King County Parcel Viewer to check – once you’ve gotten to the page for your address, click through to the “property detail” page.)

I live in Ravenna, but last Saturday was coaching at a track meet in West Seattle. I found a big bin of sentimental items hidden in the wooded area just west of the golf course. I’m hoping to find the owner of the items.

The bin included things like old family photos, a 1928 yearbook, sympathy cards, old newspaper articles, legal documents (e.g. sale of house, medical records). I haven’t been through every piece yet, but everything so far is dated 2004 or much earlier, so no useful contact info yet. It seems the items originally belonged to Harry Pierce, who was 90 in 2004.

She contacted police, but they couldn’t help, so she took the bin home for safekeeping. If you have a lead, please comment, or email us and we’ll connect you.
