Here’s what’s happening today – starting with what’s happening right now:
NUTMOBILE: Until we got the announcement about its visit to the Senior Center of West Seattle today, we were somehow unaware of the existence of the Planters Peanuts Nutmobile. It’s there until about 11 am, as part of a celebration of Meals On Wheels volunteers. Look for it in the parking lot east of the center, off 42nd SW south of SW Oregon.
BUDGET MEETING: Also happening now, the first of two City Council meetings today in which they’re continuing their review of budget proposals – including the proposed change in misdemeanor criminal defense. The agenda includes viewing information.
WEST SEATTLE BRIDGE COMMUNITY TASK FORCE: Online at noon, the advisory group talks more about the Cost-Benefit Analysis that’s meant to help shape the repair/replace decision. Mayor Durkan will attend part of the meeting to hear task force members’ feedback, according to the agenda. You’ll be able to see the livestream here.
BOEING FIELD’S FUTURE: Today’s the day – as previewed here – that King County International Airport is having online “open houses” to talk about its future, aka the Master Plan. Proposed projects of note include a new airport “fuel farm” on the west side of East Marginal Way, just across the Duwamish River. Two more meetings are ahead at noon and 6 pm; if you want the attendance info, email KCIACommunityOutreach@kingcounty.gov ASAP (the county website is having trouble right now; update – working now).

We’re taking a moment to remind you that Daylight Saving Time ends early Sunday (2 am November 1st) – that’s when we “fall back” one hour. So while the sunset is right before 6 pm now, next week it’ll be before 5 pm – moving toward the earliest sunsets of the year, 4:17 pm on December 9-10.
P.S. Though it’s now been a year and a half since our state law changed to allow permanent Daylight Saving Time, its implementation won’t happen unless Congress changes federal law. There was an attempt this fall to at least extend DST for a year.

ALKI UCC DONATION DRIVE: Alki UCC is having another of its periodic donation drives, 10 am-3 pm outside the church , food and clothing:
Food and basic supplies such as toilet paper and diapers are distributed through the White Center Food Bank. We’re accepting school supplies for all grades on behalf of one or more local schools to be distributed when students are back at in-person learning. Donations of clean, new, or used men’s casual/work clothing are distributed through the Westside Interfaith Network’s hot lunch program for people experiencing homelessness, The Welcome Table. In case you missed the announcement this past week – the Seattle Public Library is bringing back due dates. Here’s the announcement:
That stack of books and DVDs you’ve had since March? We’re ready for them to come back! Starting Nov. 1, staggered due dates will be applied to all physical materials currently checked out from The Seattle Public Library. Due dates were suspended when Library buildings were closed to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
“Now that Curbside Pickup and book return services are in full swing, it’s important we get books and other materials back to ensure a well-stocked collection for patrons who are ready to check out new items,” said Bo Kinney, managing librarian for the Library’s Circulation Services.
Loan periods will remain the same as they were prior to the Library’s COVID-19 closure: three weeks for most materials and two weeks for DVDs and Peak Picks titles. Patrons will be contacted individually about specific due dates and return options.
BOOK DROPS OPEN DAILY
The Library is now accepting returns at 13 Library locations [in West Seattle – High Point and Southwest]. No appointment is necessary to return materials. Book drops are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or until they are full.
Two weeks before a patron’s due date, a one-time email notice will be sent asking for materials to be returned and providing information about return options. We will also be sending regular due date reminders and other notices, available by email, phone, and text message. See spl.org/notifications for more detail. To pick up new holds while returning books, visit the Library’s Curbside Service page for locations, hours and appointment options.
NO MORE LATE FINES
The Library no longer charges daily late fines for overdue items, thanks to the 2019 Library Levy, and, if no one else is waiting, an item may be renewed up to three times. However, patrons are still responsible for returning items on time. If an item is kept 31 days past the due date, a patron’s Library account will be temporarily suspended and some digital media services will not be accessible until all overdue items are returned. (Normally, a patron’s account would be suspended if an item is kept 14 days past its due date, but that rule has been relaxed during this time.)
As for when SPL will reopen for in-building service – they’re still working on that.

GET A FREE PUMPKIN: Happening today outside Lafayette Elementary:
he Lafayette Garden program has extra pumpkins and would like to offer them up to the community! Stop by the school (2645 California Ave SW) to pick one up for yourself, they will be by the flag pole from 10-4, or until they are gone. Our students have been learning all about the ones they took home with a pumpkin S.T.E.M. lesson that encourages the kids to measure, weigh and learn about their pumpkin. Lessons will be out front as well for anyone looking for a fun activity to do with their child. If you are interested in exploring garden programming at your school or have any questions don’t hesitate to leave your name in the box by the pumpkins. The pumpkins were made possible through a grant by the Robins Family foundation (thank you!).

A huge shout-out to all the generous people who filled our lobby with donations of non-perishable food, school supplies and men’s casual/work clothing during our last expanded donations drive. The next Call for Donations is this Sunday, October 11, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, outside Alki UCC’s front entrance at 6115 SW Hinds
Food and basic supplies such as toilet paper and diapers are distributed through the White Center Food Bank. We’re accepting school supplies for all grades on behalf of one or more local schools to be distributed when students are back at in-person learning. Suggestions include backpacks, #2 pencils, black and blue ink pens, crayons, lined paper, glue, small scissors, colored pens, writing notebooks and colored paper.
Donations of clean, new or used men’s casual/work clothing are distributed through the Westside Interfaith Network’s hot lunch program for people experiencing homelessness, The Welcome Table. There is a constant and growing demand for denim apparel, khaki’s, hoodies, tee shirts, sweatshirts, clean underwear, socks, shoes and all kinds of outerwear for the fall and winter. ‘Words, Writers, & SouthWest Stories,’ a historically based speaker series from the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, is excited to announce that it is hosting James Gregory for a live Zoom presentation on Thursday, October 8 at 6:00 PM. Gregory will deliver a presentation titled “The Seattle General Strike.”

With some West Seattle schools like Little Pilgrims closing permanently, most others focused on remote learning, and some bigger center-based programs experiencing COVID scares, new neighborhood schooling options are emerging as the community looks for safer options. Parents are invited to a community event to learn about childcare and school options now or to learn about joining the waitlist for programs next year. All featured programs have a 8:1 or smaller child/parent ratio and follow strict CDC guidelines for schools/childcare programs. The event will feature different types of programs with a wide range of rates, including:
-half day/full day outdoor-focused programs (forest school) in Schmitz Park and other local parks
-half day/full day preschool programs
-half day/full day early elementary K-4th grade micro-schools and virtual programs

SDOT MEETING ABOUT 26TH SW: As noted in the Delridge road project’s most recent bulletin, a proposal for “diverters” where the 26th SW greenway crosses Brandon and Genesee is back – or, the city could convert that stretch into a no-through-vehicle-traffic “Stay Healthy Street.” An online community meeting is planned tonight at 6:30 pm – find the connection info by scrolling down the project page and looking for the section headed “Upcoming meeting about adjacent Delridge Neighborhood Greenway.”
