Thanks to Brian for the tip: The Solstice Park tennis courts will be resurfaced soon. And that work will include adding pickleball lines to three of the six courts. Though the work was scheduled to start next week, Parks tells us the start date may slide because, “The contractor who will doing this project is currently working on resurfacing the courts at Volunteer Park, which has been delayed some this week due to the change in the weather. It has to be dry for the surfacing to dry or cure properly between the layers of color.” Once the Volunteer Park work is complete, Parks says, then the Solstice Park work can begin. Meantime, regarding the plan to add pickleball stripes to three of the courts: “It will be the north three courts so that the Lock Box we plan to install will be easily accessed from the north court gate. We will be purchasing 6 temporary nets there to be used at Solstice Park.”
P.S. While researching this, we noted that the city is still proceeding with a plan to add “dedicated pickleball sites,” including Hiawatha; while that plan suggested there would be community “engagement” this month about that, Parks told us it’s now more likely to happen this fall.
That’s “Coach Al” and his 10-to-11-year-olds’ volleyball team from last year. He asked us to share this announcement that registration is open for this year:

Two months ago, we published this report on athletes from West Seattle’s Rain City Ropeworks making the national jump-rope team. Now we have an update on local jumpers’ achievements at the national and world championships; the report and photos were sent by Zack Hill:
Rain City Ropeworks, a West Seattle-based jump rope team coached by Rene Bibaud, has had a busy summer performing and competing. In June, 10 members competed at the National Jump Rope Championship in Milwaukee, competing against 30-plus teams from across the US.
Rain City competitors included Mara Garrison, Grace Muller, Avery Forcum, Ethan Im, Alia Lundburg, Riley Hill, Ava Wheatley, Madeleine Garrison, Halle Morgan, and Calla Freeman.
Grace and Madeleine both medaled in Single Rope Freestyle, earning a 3rd place spot, and Ethan and Alia together medaled for their partner routine.
Riley, Ava, and Madeleine [seen above at worlds] were crowned National Champions in Double Dutch Single Freestyle. The team was recognized by their peers and other coaches for excellence in choreography and musicality and is making a name for themselves as a new team on the scene at the national and international level. You may have seen Grace and Alia along with some of their younger teammates in the West Seattle Grand Parade last Saturday.
Five of these incredible athletes — Riley, Ava, Madeleine, Halle, and Calla — were named to the United States National Jump Rope Team, and last week made their first-ever appearance at the World Jump Rope Championships in Colorado Springs, CO.
The double dutch team of Riley, Madeleine, Halle, and Calla earned 5th place in their division of the international open tournament. Congratulations to all of these athletes and Coach Rene on their success!

We reported yesterday on the plan for next Sunday’s Alki arrival of dozens of Indigenous canoe families during the Paddle to Muckleshoot, first tribal Canoe Journey since pre-pandemic. One day earlier – next Saturday (July 29th) – a different canoe event will take over Alki: The Seattle Outrigger Canoe Club-hosted annual Da Grind races. Canoe clubs come from around the region to participate in a day of racing that is scheduled to start around 9 am Saturday and wrap up in time for a 3:30-ish awards ceremony.
Proud mom Stephanie Jordan reports that her daughter Claire Gordon (above left) is a national champion! Claire “earned a gold medal in the U17 Women’s 4+ at the 2023 USRowing Summer National Championships last weekend – she rowed stroke seat for the U19 Selection Development team. Claire also won a bronze medal in the Women’s U23 8+, which is particularly cool because she’s just 14!” Claire will be a West Seattle High School sophomore this year, after finishing her freshman year remotely from Ohio, where she was training. Stephanie tells us more about Claire:
-She rows 6 days a week during the Fall and Spring seasons at Green Lake.
-She earned a silver medal as NW Junior Regionals in the Women’s JV 8+ in May and competed with the Green Lake Varsity 8+ boat at Junior nationals in Sarasota last month.
-Her results this season earned her one of 44 spots at the U19 Selection Development camp (part of the Olympic Development Program), where she trained for 4 weeks with rowers from across the United States
-Claire tried rowing two summers ago at the encouragement of her older brother William, who is also a NW Youth Regional gold medalist in the Men’s 4V 8+, and a junior at WSHS
William also rows for Green Lake, Stephanie tells us, a program managed through Seattle Parks. Green Lake is also the site of the next regatta on August 5th. P.S. You can see Claire’s race in this video.
My Team Triumph – a program through which people with disabilities experience endurance events – was the first starting wave at this year’s Float Dodger 5K a little over an hour ago, preceding the West Seattle Grand Parade. New start/finish location this year for Float Dodger 5K, since the Hiawatha field is closed for turf replacement – activities moved a bit south to the West Seattle High School parking lot. The starting waves continued with the “fast runners”:
The “medium runners”:
The “casual runners”:
And the “power walkers”:
West Seattle Runner presents the Float Dodger 5K, with proceeds going to the West Seattle Food Bank. We’re told 624 people had registered by the 9:30 am start. First to cross the finish line (added) – 23-year-old Isaac Weber, in 16:22:
(Results are here – the oldest timed finisher was 81, the youngest, 6!) A free-to-participate Kids’ Dash happened half an hour before the run/walk.
Community co-sponsors helped power the Float Dodger 5K, including WSB sponsor Lake Washington Physical Therapy-West Seattle.
ADDED 2:34 PM: Here’s the actual float-dodging (featuring the Rotary “End Polio Now” float):

Before we jump into coverage of West Seattle Summer Fest day 3, a two-part reminder: Two more major summer events that will bring thousands to California Avenue SW are coming up next Saturday. July 22nd will start with the Float Dodger 5K, presented by West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) as a fundraiser for the West Seattle Food Bank. Runners/walkers will leave the West Seattle High School parking lot (3000 California SW) at 9:30 am and head southbound to The Junction and back. Register online this weekend for the last chance at an advance discount rate; you also can register at the store (2743 California SW) until Thursday.

Less than an hour after most Float Dodgers cross the finish line, the West Seattle Grand Parade will get rolling from California/Lander, with at least 70 entries expected to head down California SW to The Junction. This year’s community honorees riding near the start of the parade are Orville Rummel Trophy for Outstanding Community Service recipient Erik Bell and Grand Marshal Whitney Moore of the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce. In the week ahead, we’ll preview more of what you’ll see in this year’s parade. It starts from Admiral at 11 am and you can grab a curbside seat anywhere along the route, south to Edmunds (amplified announcing stands are at Charlestown and Alaska).

Another local youth-baseball success story! This one is from Coach Penny Stone, vice president of the Southwest Little League board and manager of the SWLL Dodgers/Regional All-Stars:
This season for Southwest Little League has been fantastic!! The SWLL Dodgers played a 12-1-1 season and won the Tournament of Champions. We combined teams with the PacWest LL – that formed the SWLL All-Star team and won the Regional (District 7) All-Star tournament.
We are headed to the State All-Star Championship as the Regional (District 7) All-Star Champions. The State Tournament will be held in Cheney from 7/15-7/23.
It’s been a long season for these players, but they are rising to the occasion. They have shown the grit and the determination it takes to go this far. This is the first time in many years for SWLL to go as far as Regionals, much less State!!
Many thanks to the parents for trusting us with their kids, the SWLL Board believing in us and PacWest for sharing their players. Thanks to all the work by District 7 to put together a seamless All-Star tournament!
And a BIG thank you to one the most knowledgeable and dedicated coaches I know, Zack Reasor.
We are so proud of these players:
Cole Utter, Jose Cardenas, Jack Derning, Pedro Toledo-Walls, Calder Stone, Dylan Dreier, Jerome Blossom, Ian Cropley, Eli Policarpio, Josue Delgado, Emiliano Morales, Torin O’Neill, Will Herman.
This small League is doing big things!!
Anyone that would like to support this great group of kids, please consider donating here:
GO DISTRICT 7 ALL-STARS!!
Co-coach is Zack Reasor (who is also coach of the Chief Sealth International High School Junior Varsity baseball team).
All-Star Week may be ending, but the midsummer excitement continues for youth-baseball All-Star teams. West Seattle Baseball has just seen one team score a regional championship, and two others are taking a swing at the titles in their categories. Proud coach/parent Randall Hauk sent the report:
While the all-stars of Major League Baseball played this week in Seattle, some of West Seattle’s finest youth baseball players went to Olympia last weekend and brought home a championship.
The West Seattle Baseball 10U Red All-Stars emerged from the PONY Baseball Northwest Regional tournament as the 2023 champions after their 11-1 victory Sunday evening over the Maltby All-Stars in the championship game.
In the photo above are:
-front/on ground – Miles Cole and Lewis Kerns
-standing – Graham Mason, Canon Womac, Koa Perez, Henry Rice, Blake Tep, Robert Jauregui, Ari Beman, Jonah Hull, Nick Webber, Chase Cummings, and Henry Hauk
-coaches – Dan Womac, Randall Hauk, and Tim KernsWest Seattle Red advanced to the final as the tournament’s number one seed, having won all three of their group-play games, out-scoring their opponents 53-18.
The team will travel to Norwalk, California as the Northwest Regional Champion to compete for the West Zone title starting on Thursday, July 20. West Seattle will first face the host team, Norwalk PONY Baseball in a first-round match set for 4:30 p.m. PDT.
West Seattle Baseball is also sending two other all-stars teams to represent the Northwest Region in West Zone play.
The West Seattle 11U Red All-Stars squad starts their quest for the West Zone Bronco-11 crown on Thursday, July 13 in Walnut, California, as they face Simi Valley at 3 p.m. PDT. The 11U is coming off a recent championship run in the Perfect Game 4th of July Blast-Off tournament, ending with a 15-0 win over Stilly Venom in the title match.
West Seattle Baseball’s 9U All-Stars will also be in Walnut, California this week to contest the Mustang-9 West Zone title, facing the host team, also at 3 p.m. PDT. The team most-recently competed in the Lee Johnson Firecracker tournament, going 3-1 before falling in the championship game.
2:31 PM: Stadium flyovers downtown often include a West Seattle pass, so in case you see/hear something, here’s what’s planned before tonight’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game at 5 pm at T-Mobile Park: Four F-35s from Hill Air Force Base in Utah will fly over during the National Anthem, according to this Deseret News report. The story might also explain the loud-but-not-on-flight-tracker jets heard (above the cloud cover) over West Seattle yesterday, as it notes that the 388th Fighter Wing, to which the F-35s belong, announced their Seattle arrival Monday. (Added: There was a Home-Run Derby flyover too.)
5:08 PM: Just heard them pass over Upper Fauntleroy.
5:42 PM: Added above – video from Andi showing the jets over West Seattle.
Still scheduling the rest of the summer? Arbor Heights Swim and Tennis Club has tennis-camp openings – Leonard asked us to share this:
Open to kids ages 7-17, no experience required, you don’t have to be a member, and racquets are provided for those who don’t have one. Questions can be directed to ah-tennis@ahstc.com.
We are offering two weeks of camp: 7/31-8/3 and 8/7-8/10. More information and our registration links are here.
It’s not only All-Star time for Major League Baseball, it’s also All-Star Tournament season for West Seattle Little League teams. Jackie Borg from WSLL shares these updates:
West Seattle Little League (WSLL) sent three baseball teams – one for each division, 10s, 11s, and 12s – and three softball teams – 10s, 11s, and Juniors (13-14-year-olds) – to compete in the WA District 7 Little League All-Stars Tournaments.
WSLL 12s baseball All-Stars won their district tournament and are state-bound! The state tournament starts on 7/15 in Poulsbo.
Juniors softball took 2nd place in the District 7 tournament.
Around town, you can catch the other WSLL All-Stars teams in play:
10s Baseball – Tournament started today @ South Highline National LL field in Normandy Park
11s Baseball – Tournament under way, with another game today @ South Highline National LL
10s Softball – District 7 Championship game tomorrow @ SWAC Upper field
11s Softball – Tournament starts 7/17 @ Issaquah HSWe will be updating the website westseattlelittleleague.com with standings as often as possible. You can also see the full schedule and check out the rosters for all teams.
Will skating officially be in the Morgan Junction Park expansion‘s future? Last Sunday during the Morgan Junction Community Festival, community volunteers talked about it with visitors – and hosted a Build-A-Board station. Josh Radick sent photos and tells WSB, “We were able to build and distribute 15 complete skateboards, 10 skateboard decks, and countless wheel and bearing combos to kids in the community!”
Also at the festival was Seattle Parks, talking to visitors about the site. Josh notes, “The voting on-site indicated that there is definitely an interest to have skateboarding included at Morgan Junction, along with a slew of other active space options for our community.”
Now it’s time for online opinion sampling – Parks promised to launch an online survey after the festival, and it went live at week’s end. The survey features elements from the original design from the site – and new ones like the possibility of accommodating skating – and asks you to pick three you’d like to see. Go here to answer the survey.
Meantime, the site – which previously held a mini-mart and dry cleaner – is due for soil cleanup starting later this year, and park development in 2025. As for the skating advocates, Radick tells WSB, “We hope to do more build-a-board events this summer.”
(Joyas Mestizas in 2022 West Seattle Grand Parade)
We don’t want to let the day slip by without mentioning the big summer-fun doubleheader that is now exactly one month away. On Saturday, July 22nd, the West Seattle Grand Parade returns, preceded by the Float Dodger 5K. Both travel along California Avenue SW from The Admiral District to The Junction. The Float Dodger 5K, presented by West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) and benefiting the West Seattle Food Bank, will start the day at 9:30 am. Since Hiawatha Playfield will be closed for turf replacement, the race will start and end in the West Seattle High School parking lot (3000 California SW). After-party is across the street at WS Runner’s storefront (2743 California SW). You can register right now by going here! Then at 11 am on July 22nd, it’s parade time, starting at California/Lander and heading southbound to The Junction – marching bands, floats, performing groups, community organizations. (Applications to be in the parade are accepted through its website and postal mail.) Just choose a seat anywhere along the route – if you want to hear announcements of who you’re seeing, you’ll want to be near California/Charlestown or California/Alaska. More on what you’ll see on parade day when it gets closer!

Another local youth-sports team has a big achievement to celebrate – the Pathfinder K-8 volleyball team has won the district championship! Matthew Clark sent the photos and report:
(The outgoing 8th graders:. From L to R Standing: Aliza Stier, Dylan Clark, Sasha Lee, Jewel Li. L-R on the floor: Marley Grantor, Alana Patton, Stella Springwalter & Aiden Jucutan-Barbon)
The Pathfinder K-8 Varsity Volleyball team won the Seattle Public Schools K-8 Championships on Saturday, June 17. The Pathfinder team came into the playoffs winning all but one of their games. They beat Catharine Blaine K-8 in the Semi-Finals two sets to one Saturday morning. Pathfinder then went on to win against TOPS K8 (The Option Program at Seward) in two straight sets in the afternoon match. The playoff games were hosted at Louisa Boren STEM K-8. During regular season play, Pathfinder had their single loss to TOPS.
This championship win for Pathfinder marks only the third post-season championship win in the history of the school. They won the SPS K-8 Championships in Boys Varsity basketball in 2016. And in 2017, the Varsity Volleyball Team took home the trophy with Coach Coco Williams, the current Pathfinder Volleyball coach, on the varsity team her 8th grade year.
Congratulations to the whole team including the JV squad for a great season. Thank you to Coach Williams and Pathfinder Athletic Director Leanna Heritage for their strong mentorship and support of our athletes.

More word of local youth sports accomplishments! Last weekend we mentioned West Seattle Baseball‘s tournament at the Pee Wee fields in Riverview. Thanks to Randall Hauk for sending this report with photos – and a look ahead:
All three West Seattle Baseball baseball teams competing at the Lower Riverview Pee Wee Fields came away with hardware last weekend at tournaments hosted by the local PONY youth baseball organization.
Ten teams from the greater Seattle metropolitan area visited our neighborhood Saturday and Sunday to compete in the 10U Summer Kickoff. The hosts fielded two teams in the tournament, each of which advanced to championship games that were scuttled by late-day rainstorms.
The 10U Red All-Stars emerged from Saturday pool play as the #1 seed in the Gold Bracket after defeating Ballard Little League 10-0 and Seattle PONY 12-2. Sunday saw the Red squad beat North Seattle PONY 6-2 in a semifinal matchup before the weather took away the possibility for the Red team to play #2 seed Bellevue Nationals. The teams walked away as soaking-wet and happy co-champions.
The 10U Navy All-Stars reached the championship of the Silver Bracket via a thrilling 3-1 extra-innings victory over Ballard Sunday afternoon. Their title game also was washed out by the rains, forcing the squad to split the spoils with Kirkland Nationals.
Meanwhile, the 9U Junior Shoot-out was contested by six teams from the regions, including groups from Bothell and Puyallup.
The West Seattle 9U All-Stars rebounded from a pair of losses on Saturday to emerge as champions on Sunday, beating Bothell Thunder 14-4 and New Level 11-7 before finishing with a 8-3 victory over Liberty in a rain-shortened championship game.
While West Seattle Baseball is proud of all its teams and players for their performances over the weekend, the league is just as proud of the efforts of its team of volunteers, who put on an amazing event that drew praise from many attendees, including one dad who took to the KJR radio airwaveS to share his appreciation of the weekend:
West Seattle Baseball hosts two more tournaments this coming weekend (June 24-25) with the 8U and 7U teams taking the field as ten more teams come to our neighborhood for more baseball fun.
Also, for those wanting to get in on the West Seattle Baseball fun, registration for Summer Crush baseball and softball is closing soon, so sign up today!
Another big achievement for young West Seattle athletes and their coaches – a statewide flag-football championship! Here’s the report we received about the victory:
This past Saturday and Sunday at Liberty HS in Renton, the 2023 3rd/4th grade flag-football team from West Seattle won the Gridiron Football State Championship! They defeated team PrimeTime from Coeur d’Alene in the finals. A great game was played between both undefeated teams but in the end West Seattle came away victorious with five total interceptions to seal the victory 38-19.
What a great season! Congratulations to the whole team, coaches, kids, and parents! Go Cougars!

The lines are painted and the Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex courts now can accommodate pickleball as well as tennis outside school hours. We first reported in April that the Westside Pickleball League had secured Seattle Public Schools permission to add stripes to the courts; now it’s been completed, and the first big tournament is in the books, the league reports:
In January, Westside Pickleball League raised enough money to clean the SWAC courts and paint “ice blue” pickleball lines for 6 permanent courts, and paint line markers for 6 additional courts so temporary lines (orange tape in photos) can be taped. In March, we received permission to move forward with the project. In mid-May the courts were cleaned, and lines were painted.

It’s been a week since our inaugural “ASTRIA Rally on the Rock” tournament on June 10th. This was the Westside Pickleball League’s way of presenting the 12 new pickleball courts to the community. Rain cancelled other tournaments in the area that day. We could not tape lines on 6 of our 12 courts unless they were dry. But we were determined to make it happen! We made some strategic adjustments. Our army of volunteers stood at the ready in the morning rain. And together we summoned some pickleball magic and forged ahead after a 3-hour rain delay!

The Seattle Metro Pickleball League wrote here about our tournament.
Here are some numbers:
(Winners of Men’s Advanced Doubles division @ tournament)
-144 players participated
-Over 51 volunteers helped
-Tournament started 3 hours late due to rain at 12:00 noon and ended at 8:45 p as we were losing sunlight. Perfect timing!
-ASTRIA Pickleball donated over $3200 in prizes for our tournament winners
-101 pounds of food were donated to the White Center Food Bank through the tournament; our fundraiser for that cause continues
-We will donate a portion of our tournament proceeds to Sealth Athletics at Chief Sealth International High SchoolThe best parts of the Westside Pickleball League are the friendships that have been made among the players, and the other communities we are able to help through donations.
(Westside Pickleball League admins Amy, Rosina, Nancy)
Our league will take a break over the summer and will start up again in Sept/Oct. Interested players should check our website WestsidePBLeague.com for registration dates opening in September.
We first featured the pickleball group in this February story. The NCSWAC courts are just west of Southwest Pool/Teen Life Center (2801 SW Thistle).
