#2, senior Demiko Bousely, scored Chief Sealth International High School‘s first touchdown of the year in this afternoon’s season-opening game vs. Franklin Pierce. That came midway through the second quarter, after FP had gone out to a 14-0 lead.
Playing at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex, Head Coach Daron Camacho‘s Seahawks tied the game in the third quarter, 14-14.

But then FP broke out with 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and that left CSIHS with a 28-14 loss. … In other notes, the cheer squad invited everyone to come dressed as superheroes or supervillains:

Head coach Jeff Scott and the West Seattle High School Wildcats are getting ready for football season, with the home opener against Renton at 7 pm Friday (September 2nd) at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle). Before they take the field, the team is hoping for an assist from you – they’re fundraising for costs beyond what basic funding covers: Uniforms, equipment, training for coaches. Seated on the rocky shore at Point Williams in Lincoln Park, surrounded by supporters, that’s Amanda Winans, who successfully completed what’s known as the Bert Thomas Swim today – leaving the Old Town Tacoma dock early this morning and swimming up Colvos Passage along the west side of Vashon Island, before crossing Puget Sound to West Seattle. She finished earlier than expected, around 2:30 pm, and is the third known person to complete the swim, including its namesake (in 1959). Her unofficial time: 9:30:23. Three years ago, she did the Amy Hiland Swim, Bremerton to Alki Point. As noted here, the Northwest Open Water Swimming Association has two more members attempting marathon swims tomorrow, both set to finish at Alki Point.
12:10 PM SATURDAY: Challenging conditions out on Puget Sound this morning, but some hardy people showed up for Sound Rowers and Paddlers‘ annual Great Cross-Sound Race from/to Alki. Top photo shows the first ones in, #16. (Full results will be here when finalized.) The race is a decades-old tradition, on the current course to Blakely Rock and back since 1994.

When last we heard from West Seattle ultra runner Riley Nachtrieb, she ran the 132-mile Olympic Discovery Trail in May. Now – she’s getting ready for a new adventure. She sent this update:
I will leave for India on August 26th to run the 17,600 ft Khardung La Challenge on September 9th (13,000 ft start, 17,600 ft summit, 10,000 ft finish).
Not only is this a big feat in altitude, as I am coming from sea-level in Seattle, I will also be the first person from the US, and the youngest to ever run this race.
I will run 45 miles across the Khardung La Pass, located in Leh Ladakh, Kashmir Jammu, India – at the base of the Western Himalaya Mountain Range. This is also known as the highest motorable road in the world.
I am really excited for this next adventure, since I completed my goal to set the first recorded run across the Olympic Peninsula in May. I have been traveling to Colorado in the past months in preparation for the Khardung La race.
I want to thank the West Seattle Community for always supporting me and my love for running. I will not have a live tracker for the race.

6:13 PM: Just heading out, hundreds of runners are participating in this year’s Alki Beach Sunset Run. They’re headed toward Duwamish Head and back; an outdoor cocktail party with a DJ will follow. No road closures.
7:30 PM: Race presenters Fizz Events told us they had about 500 registrations for this year’s run. They were launched in four waves – (updated) here are all four:

As busy as Alki Beach is on a summer Saturday night, that’ll kick up a notch tomorrow night, with the Alki Beach Sunset Run 5K back for another year, its third – launched in 2019, skipping 2020, returning last year. It’s set to take off from the Alki Bathhouse (60th/Alki) vicinity at 6 pm Saturday (August 20th), heading to Duwamish Head and back, no road closures. Organizers describe it as a party as much as a run, with a DJ and cocktail garden awaiting participants after they finish. If you’re interested in participating, you still have time to register online – or on site starting at 4:30 tomorrow.
Last year, Joe Drake‘s friend Amy told us about his World Marathon Majors achievement, Now Amy has let us know that the West Seattle runner living with Parkinson’s is getting ready for a new running adventure: On September 9-10, Joe and 11 others living with Parkinson’s will run the Blue Ridge Relay as Team Synapse. Watch the video above to meet them all. It’s a 208-mile relay spanning two states, Virginia and North Carolina, over a day and a half. They’re looking for support to back Parkinson’s research – their running is extra-meaningful because exercise is a tool they use to slow the progression of Parkinson’s. With less than four weeks of summer break remaining, some back-to-school planning is ramping up. At Chief Sealth International High School, it’s time to look ahead to sports. All prospective 2022-2023 sports participants are invited to an open-house event at the school (2600 SW Thistle) on Monday night (August 15th), 6:30-7:30 pm. It’ll be held in the galleria. 10-year-old Nathan Tavel spent an hour this afternoon at West Seattle Bowl, knocking down pins as fast as he could – he was a young man on a mission: The start of a month-long fundraising challenge to help the West Seattle Food Bank‘s work knocking down hunger and homelessness. Just take a look at a moment of the pace he kept up for an hour:
In his hour of bowling, Nathan knocked down 2,116 pins. (He’s been bowling since he was 4.) Now it’s your turn. Any time between now and Labor Day, go to West Seattle Bowl and lay out $25 for the challenge. $15 of that goes to WSFB, $10 to WS Bowl. You get an hour to try to top Nathan’s pin total. If you don’t, you donate an additional $25 to the food bank; if you do, WS Bowl will donate an additional $25 to the food bank on your behalf. And if you do top Nathan’s pin total, you’ll be entered into a drawing for $100 at a local restaurant. This isn’t Nathan’s first bowling benefit – whose proud dad Phil was there today to cheer him on:
Two and a half years ago, we covered Nathan’s real-time bowling challenge – he invited teams to try to beat his pin total in two hours. That raised more than $900! P.S. If you haven’t been to West Seattle Bowl, it’s at 39th/Oregon on the east edge of The Junction.
Also happening today in addition to what’s on our preview list: A dine-out fundraiser at Lady Jaye in The Junction for the Seattle Badgers D-division team’s trip to the 2022 Gay Softball World Series.
The team has five players and two coaches who live in West Seattle. The GSWS is in Dallas this year, starting later this month, and the Badgers are fundraising to help cover travel costs. Lady Jaye is one of their sponsors and today the restaurant/bar is donating a percentage of proceeds to the Badgers. Dining hours are 2-8 pm but you can also buy gift cards or meat-shop merchandise at LJ now through 8 pm to be part of the fundraiser. Lady Jaye is at 4523 California SW. The Badgers play in the Emerald City Softball league.
It’s a big goal – running a half-marathon – if you’re a beginning runner. But West Seattle Runner‘s periodic free training program Get Fit West Seattle can get you there. Less than an hour ago, Alison Peterson completed her first marathon swim in style – arriving at Alki Point about six and a half hours after leaving Bremerton. Her husband Erik and daughters Marcella and Eloise were on the beach to welcome her.
The 10.4-mile swim between Bremerton and Alki Point is known as the Amy Hiland Swim, after the woman who was the first known swimmer to accomplish it, on August 1, 1959. The Northwest Open Water Swimming Association – many of whom swim regularly off Alki – revived it in recent years, after no one tried it in more than half a century; we reported on Erika Norris‘s success in 2016, and others followed. One year ago, in one weekend, Melissa Kegler became the first to swim it round trip, and the Silver Seals – six swimmers over 60 – did it as a relay.

NOWSA’s Amanda Winans – herself an Amy Hiland Swim veteran – told us before Peterson’s swim today that “Alison has enthusiastically supported other Alki swimmers over the years by crewing marathon swims and making delicious baked goods, and the community is excited that it’s her turn.”

West Seattle Junior Football and Cheer kicks off its season August 8th, starting with practices at Hiawatha Playfield and 8 or 9 games, extending through October.
The program is open to all youth from ages 5 to 14. The youngest division (5-7) plays flag football, while the older divisions play tackle.
We slowly teach the game of football with some life skills along the way; many of our graduates continue to play at our local high schools and beyond.
We are a proud member of the Northwest Junior Football League (NJFL), which emphasizes sportsmanship and player safety, as evidenced by our pre- and post-game meetings of the teams at each and every game.

Pickleball is a surging sport – and with all ages playing, some players are in search of strategies to keep up with the challenges.
Mark Bouma of Lake Washington Physical Therapy‘s West Seattle clinic (WSB sponsor) tells us, “I recently had the opportunity to contribute to a national physical therapy magazine article (APTA Magazine) on how physical therapy is helping pickleball players stay healthy! Since pickleball is such a popular and fast-growing sport, particularly in the PNW, I thought this may be of interest to members of the West Seattle community.” Here’s the article in PDF. Mark also sent this link to an article on pickleball and shoulder injuries that he published last year on the LWPT website. Pickleball is so hot in Seattle, the city Parks Department is working to expand facilities; next step in its ongoing study is an August 11th briefing.

The Float Dodger takes participants along the West Seattle Grand Parade route on California SW from Hiawatha to The Junction, this year “dodging” the West Seattle Rotary‘s float pre-parade. West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) presents the Float Dodger 5K, and told us this morning that more than 520 people had registered! Following the 5K, it’s root-beer-float time. Results are here; fastest finisher was 34-year-old Steve Raswey Ng’etich, in 15:31.

Kids 7 to 12 years old are invited to West Seattle Little League Sandlot Fun Days starting next week, even if they have no experience playing baseball/softball! Here’s the announcement:
West Seattle Little League is bringing back Sandlot Fun Days for a second season after the success of the inaugural series last summer.
The Sandlot games are a player-led, unstructured opportunity for players to come together for a fun, relaxed game of baseball or softball, where kids make the rules, make the lineups, and make the calls. Like a pickup game in any sport, it all starts with showing up. Every Sandlot game will be its own party, and every party is about having fun and just playing.
Sandlot Fun Days are open to anyone ages 7-12 – no prior experience required and players are not required to reside within WSLL boundaries.
If you know a kid who wants to try baseball or softball in an informal environment, please spread the word!

Last weekend, we mentioned the West Seattle Baseball 10U Red All-Stars were headed to the Battle of the Bats Tournament in Tacoma, 16 teams from around the state. They returned home as champions! Here’s the update:
The West Seattle Baseball 10U Red All-Stars went 5-0 over the weekend and brought home the championship. They had a cumulative score of 58 to 8 over those 5 games.

Two more West Seattle Little League All-Star teams win district title
Little League WA District 7 tournaments wrapped up this week with West Seattle Little League (WSLL) 10s Baseball and Softball teams taking the district title win to secure their spots in the WA State tournament.
10s Softball All-Stars
The WSLL 10s All-Star softball team beat Seattle Central on Tuesday after being down 21-20 in the top of the fifth inning. The team rallied to turn the game around and take home the District 7 championship win 35-28. Isabella Vann swung for the fences in the third inning with an inside-the-park home run.

The 10s took the District 7 championship on Thur in dramatic walk-off fashion, thanks to a walk-off single at the end of the game to topple South Highline National. The game was tied at 7 with WSLL batting in the bottom of the 6th when Julian Patino singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring the winning run.

Juniors softball secures spot in district 7 championship
Three cheers for the Juniors (13-14 year olds) softball team, who won their game on Wednesday to advance to the WA District 7 championship game in their inaugural season with West Seattle Little League! The game starts at 10 am on Saturday, July 2 at Mt Rainier High School (22450 19th Ave S) in Des Moines. WSLL is excited to field 2 softball All-Stars teams (Juniors and 10s) this year and watch the teams thrive and represent the best of West Seattle.
12s baseball – state-bound
The 12s All-Stars baseball team went undefeated in their tournament run and fought off a tough South Highline National LL team on Thursday, winning 7-2. Parker Manderino launched a home run in the first inning. The 12s move on to the state tournament starting July 16 at 4:30 pm at Lynndale Park (18927 72nd Ave W) in Lynnwood.
11s baseball – state-bound
The 11s All-Stars baseball team also won big on Thursday, defeating Renton LL 13-3. They tallied a total of 10 hits in the game. Brookes Kalivoda drove in 5 runs on 2 hits including a home run. The 11s state tournament run begins July 16 at Federal Way National Little League Complex (450 SW Campus Dr).

Last week we noted the start of All-Star season for West Seattle Little League baseball and softball teams. This morning we have an update and photos sent by WSLL’s Kristin Widman:
West Seattle Little League is off to a hot start in the District 7 tournament! The 11s and 12s have both advanced to their respective championship games this week.
The 12s have been putting on a pitching clinic this week, pitching two no-hitters and only allowing 1 hit total in their three games. The offense is also “hitting” on all cylinders with a total of 28 runs in the 3 games.
You’re invited to help pack the stands at Bar-S this Thursday, June 30 at 6 pm when the WSLL 12s team goes for the district title. (Bar-S is at 64th SW and SW Admiral Way.)
The 11s are also a force with 3 solid wins this week. They have two shutout wins and have outscored their opponents 38-4. They play for the district title at Valley Ridge Fields (4644 S. 188th St, SeaTac) against Renton Little League tonight (Wednesday, June 29) at 6 PM.
