VOLLEYBALL: West Seattle victorious over visiting Chief Sealth

It’s just about midway through the regular season for high-school volleyball, and it was a crosstown clash tonight for West Seattle High School and visiting Chief Sealth International HS. The home team won the night, 3 to 1.

It wasn’t a runaway win. The Wildcats took the first two games, 26-24 and 25-20. Then Sealth took the third, 25-21.
West Seattle came back for the victory, winning the fourth game 25-14. The Wildcats, coached by Abby West, are now 3-5; the Seahawks, coached by Desiree Johnson, are 3-2. Both teams have home games at 7 pm next Tuesday – Sealth hosting Ballard, WSHS hosting Garfield.

10:07 PM: At Southwest Athletic Complex, Chief Sealth International High School has just won the annual Huling Bowl game against West Seattle HS for the third year in a row. Final score: 42-0. Details and more photos later.
ADDED EARLY SATURDAY: About the only bright spot for the Wildcats – playing as the home team (both teams play home games at SWAC) – was that the game stayed scoreless until 3:14 remaining in the first quarter, when Sealth #11 Bishop Jackson scored his first of two touchdowns.

That’s WSHS #9 Khalel Kelley above with Brown. The second quarter was when Sealth really broke it open, adding three TD, starting with one by #32 Elias Orbino:
The halftime score was 28-0. Sealth added one touchdown in each of the final quarters.
And with that, Head Coach Ted Rodriguez and the Seahawks kept the trophy.

FOOTBALL: Chief Sealth’s first win of the season
9:44 PM: At Southwest Athletic Complex, the Chief Sealth International High School Seahawks just scored their first football win of the year, 27-24 over the visiting Nathan Hale Raiders. CSIHS is now 1-1. Photos and details later!
ADDED 11:45 PM: Sealth’s #11 Bishop Jackson was a standout in the victory, running in two of the Seahawks’ touchdowns as well as making some key defensive moves in the fourth quarter, holding off Hale to secure the win.
First Sealth TD was scored with 5:56 to go in the first half by #3, Zach Cunningham:
Jackson’s first TD followed less than a minute and a half later, so the Seahawks went into the locker room at halftime with the lead, 12-8.
Two Hale touchdowns in the third quarter put the Raiders ahead 24-12, but Sealth mustered a comeback. The quarter ended with a huge TD run by #21 Talen Thomas.
Then Jackson’s second TD, with 8:34 to go in the game, and a 2-point conversion, gave Chief Sealth the lead for good, 27-24.
Next week, Head Coach Ted Rodriguez and the Seahawks will see if they can win the Huling Bowl trophy for a third consecutive year.
The annual crosstown clash vs. West Seattle High School (0-2) is set for 7 pm September 20th at SWAC.
CONGRATULATIONS! Another stellar BMX season for West Seattle’s Colton Fukano
West Seattle’s Colton Fukano has been riding BMX since he was 3; we first featured him when mom Shawnda Fukano sent word of his championship at age 4, and he’s still succeeding in a big way three years later. Her latest update:
Colton Fukano earned second place overall in the Washington State BMX Championship for the 2019 season in the 8 expert category. We are so proud of all of his hard work this season as he moved up to racing in the much more difficult expert category.
Racing is still happening at the North SeaTac BMX track on Thursday nights and Saturday afternoons if anyone wants to try it out. The Halloween costume race is especially fun!

Yes, that was a Seahawks flyover
This time it semi-paled in comparison to last night’s lightning storm, but still loud, so in case you weren’t sure, yes, that was a Seahawks-bound flyover heard a bit ago over West Seattle. Via Twitter, found some background info here – F-16s from Holloman AFB.

We’ve told you before about Queen City Futsal, which plays in South Delridge. Now with fall registration concluding, they’re sending out a last call for women – with the last call to register today:

SPORTS: West Seattle High School’s football season begins

The West Seattle High School football team’s season opened at home Friday night at Southwest Athletic Complex. The visiting North Thurston HS Rams went home with the win, 43-7. Neither team scored in the first quarter, but things got going in the second, including WSHS’s lone TD, by #9, senior Khalel Kelley:
At halftime, the Wildcats were still within striking distance, down 16-7.
But the Rams were on a roll, and pulled away in the second half.
Next Friday, Head Coach Jeff Scott and the Wildcats are on the road at South Whidbey.
VIDEO: First-ever Alki Beach Sunset Run
Just under way – the first-ever Alki Beach Sunset Run, starting in six waves on the promenade and continuing up to Alki Avenue. (video added)
Traffic in the area will be restricted until about 7:30 pm. The run is using the westbound traffic lanes; side streets are blocked off. The post-race party will continue west of the Bathhouse until 8:30 pm.
SPORTS: No Sundodger cross-country meet at Lincoln Park this year

What’s usually one of the biggest events of the year at Lincoln Park will not be happening this year. The Sundodger Invitational cross-country meet usually brings hundreds of student-athletes to Lincoln Park each fall. But while doing some research for the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar, we noticed it seemed to have vanished from the calendar at the University of Washington, which presents the meet. So we checked with the UW; spokesperson Michael Bruscas confirms, “This year the coaches were looking to adjust the timing of the Sundodger but there turned out to be a schedule conflict with the dates they were looking at so it just didn’t work out. But it certainly may return in future years.”
YOU’RE INVITED! First annual Westside Golf Tournament to benefit school playfield project
Four weeks from today, you’re invited to a golf tournament to raise money for a project to expand the usability of West Seattle High School‘s south playfield by student athletes. First, some background:
West Seattle is growing! More people using the parks has shrunk access by WSHS student athletes. Seattle Public Schools has a joint-use agreement with the Parks department that limits WSHS access in favor of groups who rent Parks fields (such as Hiawatha). Baseball practices for example used to be 3+ hours; today they are less than 2 hours as non WSHS sports teams claim the field.
In 2017 a group of WSHS parents, booster, coaches, and administrators began a campaign to expand field access by installing artificial turf, covered batting cages, fencing, and other athletic training resources on the West Seattle High School south play field — at one time a parking lot and also a dog park. Our growing movement has achieved great progress — individual matching donors have stepped up, Seattle voters approved the BEX V levy, and a growing alumni network is beginning to engage.
The South Playfield Athletic Resources and Cages (SPARC) project will benefit all WSHS students through enhanced PE curriculum and access by all sports teams. This project will provide a turf practice area, covered cages and equipment for all teams at WSHS, benefiting players of all abilities and across all athletics. Proceeds from the Westside Golf Tournament will go toward the construction of SPARC. Investing in this infrastructure project today benefits the community of kids today and the high schoolers of tomorrow.

Next Amy Hiland Swim attempt set for Sunday
This Sunday (September 1st), Amanda Winans will be the next open-water swimmer to attempt the Amy Hiland Swim, named for the woman who in 1959 became the first person on record to accomplish the swim between Bremerton and Alki Point. Six have done it since – from Erika Norris in September 2016 to Stephanie Zimmerman earlier this month. Northwest Open Water Swimming Association president Andrew Malinak announced the Sunday plan and tells WSB, “Amanda is yet another swimmer who has been training at Alki for the past several years, and has been a regular training partner of Stephanie Zimmerman since she began training at Alki. This will be Amanda’s first marathon swim. Amanda is a research engineer at the UW School of Oceanography, and regularly entertains us on swims by pointing out which marine invertebrates we’re swimming through.” Both Stephanie and Erika will be among the crew supporting/officiating during Amanda’s swim; Andrew will pilot the support boat.

The approach of fall not only means back to school, it’s back to sports for many local kids. The West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) has opened soccer signups – here’s the announcement:
Get in the game this fall with Y soccer for ages 3 to 8. Kids learn the rules of the game, sharpen skills like dribbling, passing, defense and offense while learning teamwork and sportsmanship.
YMCA youth sports encourage and promote healthy kids, families, and communities by placing a priority on family involvement, healthy competition rather than rivalry, the value of participation over winning, team-building as well as individual development, a positive self-image and a sense of fair play and mutual respect for others. Parents are encouraged to be more than mere spectators, by contributing their time as volunteer coaches—as well as being their kid’s greatest fan.

Our season runs from September to the end of October. We have both varsity and junior varsity teams. Golf is a non-cut sport so there are no tryouts and all skill levels are welcome.
