FOLLOWUP: SDOT says it’s going ahead with removing downhill driving lane on Highland Park Way hill

(WSB file photo)

Leadership of HPAC discovered this week that SDOT had posted significant otherwise-unannounced updates online regarding the Highland Park Way hill project. It’s been in planning for a while and was a named project in the Seattle Transportation Levy; the most controversial component was the proposal to rechannelize the hill with one downhill lane plus either a protected bicycle lane, or a protected multi-use path, or both. HPAC leaders contacted SDOT’s James Le to clarify, and via email today, he confirmed they’re going ahead with the plan to remove the downhill driving lane:

… The project team is continuing to develop a proposed design. Based on what we heard from community members, we have updated our concept to maintain all lanes on Highland Park Way SW at the W Marginal Way SW intersection. The updated concept will still include removing a downhill driving lane from SW Holden St to Pioneer Industries (about 600 feet from the intersection). We anticipate having the updated concept to share this spring.

The new online updates include long and short reports about community feedback on the proposal. The top “key theme” was summarized as “Many worry that removing a driving lane may increase congestion and make driving through the area more difficult.” HPAC has invited SDOT to present the plan at one of its upcoming meetings (usually the fourth Wednesday).

US Postal Service confirms Tukwila incident affecting West Seattle mail delivery today

The U.S. Postal Service confirms that mail delivery here will be disrupted today – but should be back to normal tomorrow – in the aftermath of a deadly shooting at a USPS facility in Tukwila. Readers asked us about the possible service interruption, so we contacted the USPS; spokesperson Zachary Laur told WSB, “Mail processing operations were temporarily suspended last night, affecting deliveries in some areas today. Normal processing operations have since resumed, and we expect mail delivery to be fully restored tomorrow.” The Tukwila shooting is believed to have involved a dispute between the worker and someone they knew, according to regional media.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Hit-and-run driver in stolen car on Alki

Reader report from Gabi on 63rd SW just south of Alki Avenue:

At 3 AM last night, we were awokened by a crash outside our window on the north end of 63rd Ave SW. It turned out to be teens who stole a car, lost control, and crashed it into our car and our neighbor’s, photos attached. Our neighbor was out smoking and saw it happen, two teens getting out of the car and running off.

Minutes later before we got outside to assess the damage, our neighbor that was outside saw a car come speeding back, a teen got out and grabbed stuff from the stolen crashed car, got back in and sped away, flipping off our watching neighbor and yelling an expletive at him.

SPD confirmed the car was stolen. We’re hoping someone on 63rd has camera footage!

We’re sad to say that this is the 3rd time within a year that out-of-control cars have crashed into vehicles parked on the west side of 63rd.

The SPD incident # is 25-59663.

If you’re in the area of the 3500 block of Beach Drive SW and wondering why multiple SFD and SPD responders have shown up – there’s a large piece of debris that’s apparently been reported as a possible “capsized boat,” but multiple responders have now told dispatch it’s a “large piece of foam,” likely broken away from a dock. (This hasn’t triggered a large response – one engine logged at a time – but it’s enough to spark some curiosity.)

New Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes will make his first public community-meeting appearance in West Seattle two weeks from tonight. The Southwest Precinct is relaunching its Precinct Advisory Council, a group that will now have open-to-all meetings, unlike its previous incarnation. First one will be at 6:30 pm Tuesday, March 18; the precinct’s Crime Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Satterwhite says that in addition to a speech and Q&A with Chief Barnes, “We will be introducing our new SWPAC Community Chairperson, and our SWPAC Community Leads, representing our various neighborhoods and community organizations.” This will be in the community room on the west side of the precinct, off the public parking lot, 2300 SW Webster.

BIZNOTE: ‘Sweet 16’ anniversary for West Seattle’s Darling Sugar

We’ve received several anniversary announcements for local independent businesses – here’s the first one, from Darling Sugar proprietor Vanessa Foley DeLong:

In the spirit of our Sweet 16, I’d like to let our community know that in March and April we have Happy Hour all day every Saturday, ANY type of bikini sugaring is $10 off! In May, June, and July, when clients bring in a box of tampons or maxipads, they will be entered into a raffle for a Kelley Baker eyebrow color palette (value over $150). We will donate all the supplies to a local women’s shelter. Every box is an entry! Schedule appointments online here.

ROAD WORK ALERT: Here’s what’s about to happen in South Alki to prepare for overflow-preventing generator project

A county-operated pump station in South Alki is getting a standby generator so that power outages won’t lead to overflows. Some preparatory work near the 63rd Street Pump Station will start as soon as next Monday (March 10), and since beachgoers (and other Alki Point Healthy Street users) will need to know, as well as the residents who’ve likely already been notified, we’re publishing this notice about it:

King County will be digging holes to locate underground utilities … Crews will use a truck to dig up to 42 holes, about 12 inches wide and up to 9 feet deep each. After this work is complete, the holes will be filled in and the street will be repaired with temporary asphalt patches. This work helps us verify sewer, water, and gas utility lines before we start the main construction project.

King County will also replace three concrete panels along Beach Drive SW, adjacent to the 63rd Avenue Pump Station to meet Seattle Department of Transportation requirements. To ensure everyone’s safety, please do not approach the crews while they are working.

(Utility-locating work route)

SCHEDULE AND DATES

-Utility locating work is expected to begin as early as March 10 and take approximately 2-3 weeks to complete.

-Concrete slab replacement work is expected to begin as early as May and take approximately 4-8 weeks to complete.

LOCATION

Utility-locating work will start at the 63rd Ave Pump Station and follow the route marked with red dots, ending at the Alki Wet Weather Treatment Station (Alki WWTS). See map above for approximate route.

Concrete panel replacement work area is located near the intersection of Beach Dr SW and SW Spokane St. See Figure 2 for approximate work area.

(Concrete panel replacement work area)

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This clean-water project will ensure the 63rd Ave Pump Station has reliable power to help prevent stormwater and wastewater from overflowing into your neighborhood and Puget Sound. We will install conduit under the road along the dotted line in Figure 1. This work will involve excavation and lane closures.

Once construction is complete, all work areas will be restored to meet City of Seattle requirements and standards, including improved pedestrian ramps at Beach Dr SW and 64th Ave SW.

2025 Construction Overview

-March to May – Utility locating & concrete panel replacement work.
-Beginning as early as May 2025, crews will trench in the street to route the conduit starting from 63rd Ave Pump Station toward the Alki WWTS. Trenching and conduit installation is estimated to be completed by Fall 2025.

2026 Construction Overview

-The installation of the generator at the Alki WWTS may begin as early as Fall 2025 and is estimated to completed by Fall 2026.
-Beginning as early as May 2026, crews will construct the transformer vault and cabinet at the 63rd Ave Pump Station. -This project is estimated to be completed by Fall 2026.

For more details on the work schedule starting as soon as next week, see the flyer here.

READER REPORT: Cookie customer helps Girl Scouts ‘bring some light and joy to West Seattle’

As we’ve been mentioning daily, it’s cookie-selling season for Girl Scouts, and dozens of local Scouts will be out again this afternoon doing just that. One troop leader sent us the story of a surprising sale last weekend, a story she hopes will “bring some positive news to our neighbors instead of just the scary stuff.” Here’s the story behind the photo you see above:

This past Saturday, 3/1, Troop 40028 was selling our Girl Scout cookies in front of Easy Street when a local West Seattle resident approached and said he “wanted to buy out our Booth.” Our Troop has been selling cookies for 6 years and we have never had this happen; make no mistake, this resident was drawn in by our excitement, enthusiasm, and spunk (we love selling cookies and talking to people). This man then proceeded to explain that all these cookies weren’t for him but rather he wanted us to hand them out to people as a gift. Our excitement went into overload; our girls had so much fun giving away boxes to our West Seattle neighbors! This West Seattle hero came back to our Booth about an hour later with “one more surprise” – as a frequent diner and supporter of Easy Street Records, Scott Scrivner, asked if he could purchase Easy Street merchandise for our Girl Scouts!

I asked Scott why he was being so kind and generous. He explained that the girls brightened his day and inspired him. Scott went on to explain that now more than ever, we have to show that there is kindness and good people and we need to bring some light and joy to West Seattle.

We hope that this story serves as a reminder of the kind and generous people that live in our community and inspires others to do good and help each other.

For our Troop, this was very meaningful; in our 6 years as Girl Scouts we have given time and cookie funds to support Mary’s Place, Girl Scouts of Western Washington, Senior Living Facilities, and (SFD Station) 37. We do park cleanups and we mentor younger Girl Scouts. Giving back is at the core of our Troop values and this moment felt like the community was giving our daughters a big thank you for their efforts. Thank you to Scott Scrivner (honorary Troop Member) for your kindness with our community and for making this day so special for our girls. This is a cookie season we will never forget.

FOLLOWUP: Cameras to crack down on vehicle noise? Legislature hasn’t hit the brakes so far

That’s Seattle Channel video of today’s City Council briefing meeting, which – as is usual this time of year – included an update on proposed state legislation that the city is watching. Among the bills mentioned today: HB 1423, which would allow cities to try out vehicle-noise-enforcement cameras. District 1 Councilmember Rob Saka has taken extra interest in this one because of the issues on Alki and Harbor Avenues, so he asked for extra details. The council’s Legislature-focused staffers told him the bill was still alive, but with some changes, including redefining it as a potential pilot program expiring in 2028, adding various reporting requirements for cities that try it, and limiting it to cities of a current size (Seattle would still qualify). Meantime, Alki Community Council president Charlotte Starck sent a bulletin to other community advocates tonight urging wide support for HB 1423 and its counterpart SB 5417, as well as requesting signatures on this new Change.org petition.

Today, Jessica Webb of Heartwood Law visited the branch to wrap up her firm’s turn in the spotlight, and to join HomeStreet’s Andrew Tento in drawing the winner of a “family night basket” she put together with items from treats to games. This Thursday (March 6) at 5 pm, she’ll return to the branch (4022 SW Alaska) for another giveaway of sorts – a free presentation where you can learn about “Estate Planning 101.” It’s important information everyone should know, from health-care directives to powers of attorney – just show up to learn.

Meantime, the March spotlight at HomeStreet will shine on the Southwest Seattle Historical Society as it prepares for its April 11th gala.

|    Comments Off on FOLLOWUP: Storm-damaged school flagpole keeps SW Myrtle closed. Here’s the plan of action
 |   High Point | Safety | West Seattle news | West Seattle schools | West Seattle weather

(WSB photo, looking southwestward toward school and flagpole from 34th/Myrtle)

In our windstorm coverage last Tuesday, we mentioned that Our Lady of Guadalupe School had closed SW Myrtle between 34th and 35th – usually just a school-hours closure – because the stability of its flagpole was in question. The street has remained closed, and taped off, since then, while OLG determined whether the flagpole had to come down. Tonight, we checked back in, and the answer is “yes.” Dave from OLG tells WSB, “The pole needs to be taken down and we think that will occur on Thursday or Friday, and we will open the road at that point.” He says the flagpole eventually will be replaced.

UPDATE: Here’s where you’ll find a Seattle Parks egg hunt in West Seattle this year

(WSB photo from 2022 egg hunt at Delridge Community Center)

MONDAY: Tomorrow is Fat Tuesday, which means Easter (April 20) is about a month and a half away, so egg-hunt season is approaching too. Seattle Parks published its citywide list of community-center egg hunts today, and so far they’re planning one in West Seattle – (updated) 10 am Saturday, April 19, at Delridge Community Center (4501 Delridge Way SW). We’re watching for announcements of others at non-Parks venues and will add those to our calendar too, once we get word of them.

ADDED TUESDAY: Parks tells us they’ve added one more West Seattle hunt to the list – High Point Community Center, also on April 19. The start time for that one and Delridge will be 10 am.

ORCAS: Southern Residents headed toward this area

For four weeks, transient orcas – the ones that are NOT considered endangered – have been in the area (including that thrilling appearance within feet of West Seattle’s shore on Sunday). Now, Kersti Muul reports, Southern Resident Killer Whales have reappeared in central Puget Sound- J-Pod whales, including calf J62, were southbound, seen approaching Fay Bainbridge State Park, at last report. That’s still a ways north of here, so this is early heads-up depending on how fast they’re traveling. Please let us know if you see them!
