From sunrise services to preparedness party, here’s the list for your West Seattle Sunday

Good morning! Here’s our list of what’s happening, mostly from the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar:

EASTER SUNDAY SERVICES & ACTIVITIES: 15 local churches answered our open call to send info on their Easter Sunday (and Holy Week) services; this list is the result. It includes 6:30 am sunrise services at Alki Beach, Forest Lawn, and Westcrest Park, as well as churches with breakfast/brunch and churches with egg hunts.

EASTER CLOSURES: A few readers asked us this week if we were making a list, and we replied that we usually don’t make an Easter list, as we haven’t historically found many closures. However, a walk around The Junction last night suggested otherwise. So, in The Junction and otherwise, here are some places we know will be closed for Easter: (updated) Circa, City Mouse, Discovery Shop, Husky Deli, Junction True Value, Nepantla Cultural Arts Gallery, Northwest Art and Frame, Talarico’s, Target, Three Little Birds. Add to the list by commenting below!

MINI-POLAR PLUNGE: 9 am every Sunday, you’re welcome to join a group plunge into Puget Sound off Alki – meet at Statue of Liberty Plaza (61st/Alki).

WESTIES RUN CLUB: Meet at 9 am at rotating locations – today it’s Olympia Coffee (3840 California SW).

WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: The market is open today, 10 am-2 pm as usual, on California SW between SW Alaska and SW Oregon, offering early-spring vegetables and fruit, plus cheese, fish, meat, baked goods, condiments, fresh-cooked food, beverages (from cider to kombucha to beer/wine), nuts, candy, more! Here’s today’s vendor list.

ALKI KAYAK TOURS: Open again today to get you out on the water!

Hop on Over to Alki Kayak Tours for an Egg-citing Easter Weekend! Join us this Easter weekend from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM for a unique and unforgettable experience. Bring your friends and family to Alki Kayak Tours and enjoy our popular Sunset or Elliott Bay tours. We will also have hourly rentals available.

CRIME WATCH: Roxbury mini-mart robbed

King County Sheriff’s Deputies are reported to be searching with a K-9 after an armed robbery at the 30th/Roxbury 76 station/mini-mart. Two robbers were reported to have left on foot, westbound on Roxbury, after acquiring an additional gun by stealing it from an employee, according to the dispatcher. A “gray sedan” might also be associated with the robbers, as was the case in what was reportedly a similar robbery earlier this evening in South King County. Seattle Police are helping KCSO look for the robbers.

BIZNOTE: Suddenly empty Junction storefront

If you’re going to the West Seattle Farmers’ Market in The Junction tomorrow, you might notice a suddenly empty storefront on the east side of the block. While at last week’s Farmers’ Market, we noticed a small whiteboard sign in the window of Seattle E-Bike at 4540 California SW, hand-lettered, announcing a “MOVING SALE.” The shop wasn’t open at the time so we couldn’t follow up, and didn’t get around to it this week. Then we got a text today from someone saying the shop is “gone.” We went down this evening to verify, and indeed, the space was empty, as our photo above shows, with no explanatory signage, nor do any of their online channels say anything about a move or closure. Looking into court records, we found documents saying the shop’s landlord had filed an “unlawful detainer” (the allegation that can lead to eviction) case in December, alleging the shop’s owner was behind in rent. Records show the case was settled this week, including an agreement for the shop to “vacate the premises” by month’s end. Seattle E-Bike had been in that space for a little more than a year, moving from 4517 California SW across the street (where Rush Hour is now) after 2 1/2 years; the shop had been in Pioneer Square before that. Before Seattle E-Bike, the 4540 California SW space had been home to Click! Design That Fits for 18 years.

 |   How to help | West Seattle news

Four weeks from tonight, people will gather to be “Instruments of Change” for the West Seattle Food Bank, furthering its mission to prevent hunger and homelessness. The WSFB’s annual fundraising dinner/auction is set for Saturday, April 27, in The Hall at Fauntleroy, and it’s not sold out – yet. This is the 17th year that WSFB will bring together supporters for a “night of food, drinks, games, auctions, raffles, and more, all to help our neighbors and build a strong community.” It all starts at 6 pm, with beverages and appetizers before dinner served by The Hall’s own Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering (see the menu on the same page where you can buy your ticket). The auction items always feature a variety of amazing one-of-a-kind experiences, from gourmet meals to dream getaways. The money raised will help the WSFB continue so many programs for which the need continues to grow, including rent and utility assistance to help people get through a crisis and stay in their homes. The Food Bank welcomes community co-sponsors for the event (we’re the media sponsor) – here’s how your business/organization can become one!

WEST SEATTLE WEEKEND SCENE: High Point Community Center hosts hundreds of egg hunters

(WSB photos/video)

You can’t have an egg hunt without the Easter Bunny’s helpers. At High Point Community Center this morning, the egg-hunt team included Debbie, Thomas, and Jeremy (above). Thanks to a lot of hard work, hundreds of kids had serious fun, from the littlest ones let loose in the gym …

… to the older ones, whose hunt was held outdoors:

High Point was one of two Seattle Parks community centers in West Seattle where egg hunts were held this morning, along with Delridge CC. All the egg hunts set for tomorrow are happening in conjunction with Easter services at local churches.

UPDATE: Hazmat response at Arrowhead Gardens

2:58 PM: For the second time in less than four months, SFD hazardous-materials responders are at Arrowhead Gardens in southeast West Seattle because of a report of sprinkled “powder,” this time on “front steps” somewhere in the senior-living complex. Last time in December, powder was reported in a hallway, and it was found to be a non-hazardous substance. Updates to come.

3:22 PM: Firefighters on scene just told dispatch they’re now ready to go into a third-floor area where this “orange powder” was reported.

4:10 PM: The incident commander has just told dispatch that what they found was a “non-threatening product.”

9:07 PM: So what WAS it? SFD tells us they couldn’t figure that out: “Our Hazmat crews performed a series of tests and determined the substance was not hazardous, but were unable to identify what it was. The scene transferred back to building management for them to clean up. No injuries were reported.”

WEST SEATTLE WEEKEND SCENE: Hunting eggs at Lincoln Park

(Photos by Jason Grotelueschen)

As we’ve been previewing, this is the biggest day on the calendar for egg hunts – and perhaps the biggest every year is the one sponsored by Eastridge Church in Lincoln Park‘s south meadow. It drew a crowd as usual:

Along with the eggs, the church brought inflatables, for post-hunt bouncing:

Pics to come later from the High Point Community Center egg hunt. And there’s still one hunt to go on today’s calendar – at Ounces, 3 pm, 3809 Delridge Way SW. Tomorrow, as featured on our list, several local churches offer egg hunts adjacent to their Easter Sunday services, too.

SPORTS: 2 updates on new WSHS water-polo team

 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle schools | WS & Sports

Thanks to Jennifer for two updates on West Seattle High School‘s new water-polo team!

The previously undefeated West Seattle Water Polo girls lost a nail-biter in the last minute of play against Shorewood on Wednesday, March 27th, with a final score of 3-5. Marlo Pietsch [above] scored all 3 goals. With no subs due to illness and injury, the Wildcats played strong defense to the end. Their next game will be after spring break against Shorecrest on April 19th at Medgar Evers Pool at 8 pm.

The team has set up an ongoing online auction with the goal of making next year’s team more affordable. Supporters can join the auction to bid on gift cards donated by local businesses at: paybee.io/@wswaterpolo@3

As previously reported, the water-polo team is a “club sport” – not supported by district funding – launched this year after students campaigned to get approval to start a team.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Assault suspect charged; store arrest; possibly stolen package found

Three notes in West Seattle Crime Watch:

ASSAULT SUSPECT CHARGED: The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged the man arrested on Tuesday for allegedly shooting at his girlfriend at the just-cleared 1st/Cloverdale encampment. 42-year-old Pascual Ferrer-Gonzalez is charged with second-degree domestic-violence assault and first-degree unlawful gun possession. Charging documents say he “got upset with the victim and began hitting her. After hitting her he armed himself with a rifle and then fired a round at her.” After police arrested him, prosecutors say, they obtained a search warrant for the RV where they found him, and that’s where they seized the weapons and ammunition mentioned previously. He remains jailed, bail set at $300,000, with his arraignment scheduled for April 9th.

STORE SUSPECT CHARGED: Early Thursday, police were called to the Marshalls store in Westwood Village for a report of a possible burglary. They eventually found a 33-year-old woman hiding under a clothing rack inside the store and arrested her for investigation of burglary, though they found no sign of forced entry. The jail docket indicates she was charged with misdemeanor trespassing and released from jail today; the Municipal Court system isn’t bringing up documents to corroborate that so far, though, so we’re not identifying her.

POSSIBLY STOLEN/DUMPED PACKAGE: If you’re in the 4800 block of 42nd SW and are missing a package, Eric may have found the box, tossed into his yard. Contact us and we can connect you.

WEST SEATTLE MUSIC: New single from Aurora Ave.

New music out today from local band Aurora Ave., which describes itself as “an 8-piece band from West Seattle that has honed an Indie-Pop, Jazz, and J-Pop sound into something uniquely our own.” They’ve been together for three years now (when we first mentioned the band, more than half the members were WSHS students), and have a new lead singer, just in time for their new single, explained this way:

The band’s new song Pearl is inspired by the challenges of finding your way in young life, and feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders. The song has existed in concept for over 3 years, and a very different version of the track was slated but eventually scrapped from the group’s self-titled debut album in 2021. Now, over 3 years later, the track has evolved into one of the group’s favorite songs.
Pearl is tied together by an incredible vocal performance by the band’s newest member, lead singer Samara Reign. Samara brings a soulful, angelic quality to the band’s brass-heavy rhythms.

You can stream or buy “Pearl” by going to one of the links you’ll find here. If you’d like to see Aurora Ave. perform, mark your calendar for Northwest Folklife on May 24 – and more to come.

TERMINAL 5: Second modernized berth now ‘fully operational’

(NWSA photo)

Back on March 20, we reported on the first cargo-ship call at the newly modernized second berth of West Seattle’s Terminal 5 [map]. At the time, the Northwest Seaport Alliance – the Seattle-Tacoma partnership that runs both ports’ cargo docks – said it wasn’t fully “commissioned” yet. Now it is, so, NWSA says, MSC Lily, at the berth right now, is the “inaugural vessel to call the fully modernized terminal.” We asked NWSA spokesperson Melanie Stambaugh what had been done since March 20 to complete the modernization; she replied, “The commissioning involved the shore power system for the last vessel. With that complete, the terminal is fully operational and the MSC Lily and future vessels can now plug-in and be worked.” The modernization of the two-berth terminal was a half-billion-dollar project.

BIZNOTE: Tony’s Market opening for the season, with a big change

(WSB photos)

You might have noticed the activity and new signage at 35th/Barton, as Tony’s Market gets ready to open for the season. One big change – new owners!

Razmye “Raz” Vorng and Sandy Saeteurn are taking over from Joey Genzale, who had run the produce-stand-and-more business since his dad, market founder and namesake Tony Genzale, died in 2010. They are West Seattle residents. They explain that Raz is an acquaintance of Tony, who they say “expressed his desire to close the chapter on his family’s produce stand. We wanted to salvage the business and keep it going.”

This is their first retail venture, though Sandy explains that Raz – who will run the store – “has an entrepreneurial mindset” as part-owner of Ananas Pizzeria on First Hill. They hope to open as soon as Monday (April 1) and expect hours for starters to be Mondays-Saturdays, 10 am-6 pm. And yes, they expect to continue the seasonal specialties for which Tony’s has long been known – pumpkins and Christmas trees.

SIGHTING: Gray whale in the area

1:50 PM: Friday afternoon whale watching! Reported by Kersti Muul – a baleen whale is in the area, most recently seen in the Fauntleroy-Vashon ferry lanes, southbound.

4:03 PM: If you haven’t seen Kersti’s updates in comments – she says it’s a gray. (Around here, baleen usually means gray or humpback – though others have shown up on occasion.)

We are so grateful for our amazing West Seattle customers that have shown their love and support for ALL THESE YEARS!” The shop is open until 5 today, 10 am-5 pm Saturday: “We opened 10 years ago on 3/30 … so we are doing a 30% discount!” Three Little Birds, selling kids’ apparel and more, is at 4736 California SW, where it moved in October 2019 after being in Morgan Junction for its first five years.

UPDATE: City, state crews clear 1st/Cloverdale encampment

(WSB photos)

11:18 AM: As reported here earlier this week, today is the first day of a clearance operation at the encampment that’s been growing on 1st Avenue South, just north of the Highway 509 Cloverdale overpass [map].

The road is narrow and traffic is backed up on southbound 1st in the area. The site includes both state and city land, so multiple agencies are involved. The first thing they’re doing is removing and towing vehicles.

Agencies on site include SDOT, SPD, SPU, and WSDOT, and they expect to be there “all day.”

Though the city and state say they’ve been planning this for months, clearance plans acquired extra urgency after a man was arrested at the encampment on Tuesday after allegedly shooting at his girlfriend.

4:18 PM: We asked state and city spokespeople for details on today’s operation. “Ten individuals were offered housing from the Cloverdale site, and all 10 accepted,” said WSDOT’s James Poling. He says the vehicles removed were on the city part of the site, so city spokesperson Lori Baxter addressed that: “A total of 13 vehicles were towed today from City property as part of this site resolution, nine of which were abandoned and partially stripped. One box truck, one RV, and one motorcycle were also included in the towed vehicles.” She added, “Outreach coordinators from the Unified Care Team were also onsite to offer same-day shelter referrals for anyone at the site that had not already received an offer of housing. One additional shelter referral was made.”

8:14 PM: We drove through the area late today – above, the view of the cleared site from the road; below, a section of fencing placed along the road just to the south:

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Budget Blinds van stolen, sample books strewn

From Angela at Budget Blinds-West Seattle (2403 Harbor SW; WSB sponsor):

This morning between 6-7 am one of our Budget Blinds vans was stolen. It was seen around 6:50am between Brandon and 46th Ave SW. A wonderful & helpful neighbor spotted the van and as it drove past her many sample books flew out and onto the street. They were picked up and stored for us to come pick up. We’ve collected 5 so far. Here are a couple photo for reference. If anyone happens to see any more books, or any info on the van, please message me?

FOLLOWUP: West Seattle’s second off-leash area location is finalized

(2023 Seattle Parks image of stadium study area for off-leash area)

It’s official: Following a recommendation vote at last night’s Parks Board meeting, Seattle Parks says West Seattle’s second off-leash area will be just south of West Seattle Stadium (the area outlined in red, above). The announcement from Parks says the “planning and construction timeline will be announced soon.” It also reiterates that Lincoln Park (the other finalist for the site, after a long study process) was “found to be unsuitable (and) not recommended for an OLA at this time based on community feedback and other existing uses). The West Seattle Stadium dog park will be funded by the Park District. The department also is planning new dog parks in South Park (near the community center) and Georgetown.

FOLLOWUP: Sound Transit Board gives staff go-ahead to pursue first ‘early property acquisitions’ for West Seattle light rail

Only one member of the Sound Transit Board voted “no” this afternoon on the first proposed “early property acquisitions” for the West Seattle light-rail extension – 25 parcels, including three in WS, as previewed here. Board member Bruce Dammeier, the Pierce County Executive, said he was concerned about granting potential condemnation authority for some parcels before the board even took a final vote on the actual routing, which isn’t expected before midsummer. Board chair Dow Constantine, the King County Executive (and a West Seattle resident), said it’s important to work with affected businesses early, and this approval was needed before they could do that. ST staff said the routing vote would likely come long before they completed the process of buying (or, if necessary, condemning) these properties, a process they said usually takes about two years, with initial negotiations lasting at least several months, and if those negotiations don’t succeed, condemnation (taking the property by “eminent domain”) would be “further down the road.” As reported here Tuesday, these are the three West Seattle parcels (the others are mostly in SODO) that were included in today’s vote:

-Parcel # 7666704005 at 2414 SW Andover, the Frye Commerce Center (home to multiple businesses, east of Nucor, including Alki Beach Academy, PNTA, Uptown Espresso, Delridge Deli Mart, among others) – 191,113 square feet, currently valued at $17.4 million per King County

-Parcel # 7666703290 at 3800 West Marginal Way SW, the Riverside Mill site, 269,452 square feet, currently valued at $14.5 million per King County

-Parcel # 9358000465 on the northwest corner of 28th/Yancy, described as “vacant” – 10,000 square feet, currently valued at $357,000 per King County

The presentation at the meeting did not elaborate on any specific properties or describe why they are needed (the Frye center, however, has been clearly shown recently as in the footprint for the “preferred alternative” Delridge station). Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell (one of the city’s two reps on the ST Board) asked what happens for businesses once authorization like this is given, saying he’s heard businesses’ concerns. They’ll get immediate notice of eligibility for relocation help, he was told. Then Dammeier voiced his concerns; staff attempted to reassure him that no tenants would be displaced before the “record of decision” (that follows the board’s final routing decision, expected to follow within a month of the Final Environmental Impact Statement release “later this spring”). Some businesses might decide they want to move sooner rather than later, he was told, but none would be forced out any time soon.

The board heard from one nearby business owner during the public-comment period at the start of today’s meeting – Erin Rubin of Mode Music Studios (WSB sponsor), on property not part of today’s vote but adjacent to the Frye parcel. Saying she also was speaking for The Skylark next door, Rubin spoke of displacement concerns and the difficulty of finding a suitable location elsewhere in West Seattle. She pointed to Sound Transit policies that stipulated more consideration for businesses in those situations.

Also speaking during the comment period was Marilyn Kennell, a homeowner in the light-rail line’s potential path between the Delridge and Avalon stations. She asked for a “seat of the table” and further discussion of the impacts of the project, both financial – businesses and job losses – and environmental, citing “needless deforestation and destruction of natural habitat.”

WHAT’S NEXT: For the owners and tenants on the “early acquisition” sites, notification and negotiation. For the project overall, ST continues to proceed toward the aforementioned Final Environmental Impact Statement, which is supposed to include responses to concerns raised after the Draft EIS was released, and a final decision on “the project to be built” will follow. On the current timeline, construction is supposed to start in 2027, and West Seattle service in 2032.
