West Seattle, Washington
21 Monday
SO much going on! In order of start time, some of the highlights:
BIG BONANZA: Just look for the red bandanas and balloons at dozens of stores in The Junction to see who’s part of today’s Big Bonanza end-of-summer sale organized by the West Seattle Junction Association (WSB sponsor) – and check this list before you go. Stop by Big Bonanza HQ in front of KeyBank at Walk-All-Ways to pick up coupons (like these) you can use at many of the participating businesses – or to be part of the water showdown at high noon! Sale starts at 10 am and runs till 5 pm.
ART FAIR AT LIFE CARE CENTER: Visitors of all ages are welcome 10 am-2 pm at Life Care Center (4700 SW Admiral) for art displays, a free barbecue lunch, kids’ activities, and more, all detailed on the official flyer.
REGISTRATION EVENT FOR ALKI BEACH 5K: With the walk/run benefiting Northwest Hope and Healing coming up a week from tomorrow, West Seattle Runner (California/Charlestown) is hosting a registration party today, 10 am-2 pm – come sign up for the Alki Beach 5K and enjoy refreshments, a raffle, plus a discount if you’re buying something from WSR while you’re there signing up for the 5K.
ARTS IN NATURE FESTIVAL: The Nature Consortium‘s annual Camp Long extravaganza (5200 35th SW) runs 11 am-9 pm today and 11 am-6 pm Sunday. You will find interactive art in the woods, music in the (newly renovated) lodge, aerial dance by The Cabiri (shown in Catherine Anstett‘s photo at left) in the meadow, among many other things. Find the schedule here.
PICNIC AT THE PRECINCT: It’s really more like a street festival, with SW Webster closed west of Delridge (map) for booths and displays that also fill the Southwest Precinct‘s parking lot in a celebration/information event put on by West Seattle’s own police HQ. 1-4 pm today, come meet not only local police, but also community volunteers from a variety of local organizations. And you never know what you’ll see – SPD usually brings out everything from Mounted Patrol horses to a remote-controlled robot.
HAMS AT THE LIGHTHOUSE: A couple weeks ago, the West Seattle Amateur Radio Club shared the story of “activating” Alki Lighthouse as part of a worldwide event – but they had to do it from a tent at Alki Beach Park. Today, they will actually be set up AT the lighthouse, and are inviting everyone to come by and get a firsthand look and listen. 1-4 pm (also one of your last chances to tour the lighthouse this summer).
FUNDRAISER FOR SAILOR’S FAMILY: 5-10 pm tonight at Alki Crab and Fish (Seacrest Pier), proceeds from beer/wine sales and raffles go to the family of Petty Officer Jarod Newlove, the West Seattle sailor killed recently in Afghanistan.
‘UP’ AT WEST SEATTLE OUTDOOR MOVIES: Second-to-last WSOM show of the summer! Come get carried away with the animated hit – AND enjoy a free barbecue courtesy of West Seattle Christian Church/Preschool (6:30 pm till the food runs out). Movie’s free, at dusk. Bring your own chair/blanket – and also consider money for tonight’s raffle to benefit Family Promise of Seattle (which helps homeless families but, as first reported here, has had to shut down because of $ shortage).
WALK ON, JAYME! The amazing story of Jayme Miller‘s sudden paralysis and fight to walk again has made news all over Western Washington, because of her friends’ decision to plan a fundraiser to help with her massive medical bills. That event is tonight at Rocksport in The Junction, starting at 7:30 pm – centered on a silent auction for which they’ve collected some terrific donations. Here’s the Facebook event page.
Even more on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar!
(P.S. And just outside of West Seattle – South Park is throwing a party at Duwamish Waterway Park 11 am-3 pm, community garage sale and free barbecue, to raise money for Wi-Fi – details on FB.)
They’ve done it again – the wants-to-remain-anonymous West Seattle dad who went on an anti-graffiti tear with his daughter in summer 2009 – here’s the resulting story – found himself back for round 2. The vandals have been busy again lately – so, he wrote:
(Thursday) we had a father/daughter outing planned for a day of swimming and enjoying the summer day. Unfortunately, the weather did not quite cooperate but we still wanted to get outside. On a recent walk through Schmitz Park, we noticed the beautiful log benches in the center of the park were once again covered with graffiti. So we decided to spend our day cleaning up the benches and other graffiti around our neighborhood. We had a wonderful time together, cleaned up a lot of graffiti, and ended the day with a great sense of accomplishment as well as a great feeling of West Seattle community pride.
He shared numerous before/after photos; we’re putting up a couple here – though, as is our policy, we’ve blurred the tags in the “before” photos.
We asked what they use to remove tags. Answer: “We use ‘Goof Off’ and some scouring pads. They make a great product, and one specialized for graffiti. As for the log benches, the only way to get it off is with a hand-held wood planer.” If you’re not up for removal but want to be sure it at least gets reported – which police stress is important – here’s how to report tagging/graffiti vandalism on public property.
Three South Park notes tonight, 2 related to the closure of its old bridge almost two months ago: First, the official application has been sent off in hopes of a federal grant to complete funding of a new bridge. King County is asking for $36 million in the TIGER II grant process; the first TIGER process is the one in which its $95 million request was denied, but the county says it’s done many things differently this time; read more here. Meantime, the process of taking apart the existing, permanently-out-of-commission bridge enters a new phase next week, and the county wants to be sure you’re not startled to see the bridge’s leaves moving for the first time since the June 30 closure – they’ll be raised and lowered as part of the process of getting ready for their dismantling within the next few weeks.Last but not least, you’re invited to a big event at Duwamish Waterway Park in South Park tomorrow – a community garage sale and barbecue, 11 am-3 pm, also featuring kids’ craft activities, entertainment, and kayaking. It’s a fundraiser to establish Wi-Fi access along South Park’s 14th Avenue South retail corridor. Here’s a map to the park (7900 10th Ave. S.)
Just announced:
The public is invited to join Providence ElderPlace and Heritage House at the Market for the 9th annual Cooking with Class event and fundraiser, to be held Sept. 14, 2010, at Salty’s on Alki.
The event pairs 22 chefs with 176 guests, with each chef teaching three 30-minute classes. Guests attend three classes each, to make a dish hands-on with the chefs. Each dish is paired with wine donated by Northwest wineries. Through this intimate setting, guests get to know the chefs and learn their tips. The concept has been such a hit that the concept and name have been trademarked.
In addition to cooking, eating and wine tasting, guests will have the opportunity to participate in a raffle of culinary items and a small live auction. John Curley, formerly of Evening Magazine, and Jeremy McLachlan, executive chef at Salty’s on Alki, will act as the auction tag team.
The event benefits Providence Heritage House at the Market and Providence ElderPlace-Seattle, both programs run by Providence Senior and Community Services, a division of Providence Health & Services. Both programs assist frail elderly in King County. For more about these programs, go to www.providence.org/pscs.
Being able to give the most possible money to the programs is the driving force behind this event. The volunteer team procures donations for auction and raffle items and wine. In an unprecedented act of giving, Salty’s on Alki has donated its entire banquet floor for the past eight years and will do so again this year. The restaurant also provides a meal for volunteers and appetizers for guests as they arrive. Local chefs donate their time and product, wineries donate wine to pair with the chefs’ dishes, Pike Brewing Co. donates beer, and many local businesses donate items to help make the event a success.
Each year, many of the same chefs and guests return. The event is fun and casual, unlike many other more formal fundraisers, and no one wants to miss the annual auction of Andaluca chef Wayne Johnson’s wild chef pants!
To register online, go to www.seattledining.com/cwc or contact Connie Adams at 206-283-9067 or connie@seattledining.com. Cost is $125 per person. Checkin begins at 6 p.m. Guests must be pre-registered. Salty’s on Alki is located at 1936 Harbor Ave SW, Seattle.
Just spotted the announcement in the WSB Forums. (It’s on the Zippy’s FB page too.) Sunday hours: Noon-7 pm.
Earlier this week, Elvis Presley fans remembered “The King” on the 33rd anniversary of his death – and tonight, Danny Vernon is re-creating “The Illusion of Elvis” for Providence Mount St. Vincent‘s summer outdoor-concert series.
Missed him? Here’s his calendar of future performances. The Mount’s series wraps up next Friday with the bluegrass/Western swing/Celtic sounds of The Haggis Brothers.
As you head back home – if you travel Highland Park Way, please note that there have been two separate incidents involving police and fire in the past hour. One, we know was a crash at HP Way/Holden; the other, 7700 block of HP Way (where it meets 8th), we’re still working to find out.

4:48 PM: SPD media unit Officer Renee Witt tells us the 2nd incident involved a man in his 70s, apparently disturbed, who was out in the middle of the street. Both of these situations sound like they’re being resolved, but let us know if you see otherwise. Thanks to the multitude of people who e-mailed, texted and FB’ed about this.
ORIGINAL 2:23 PM REPORT: Thanks to Julie and Nicole for the tips on this: Police are negotiating with someone who is “barricaded” inside a house in the 4300 block of SW 104th (map) in Arbor Heights. That has blocked off 104th from 42nd to California (update: confirmed at the scene); Katie reports Marine View Drive is affected too. Seattle Police media unit Det. Mark Jamieson says the person is NOT believed to have anyone else inside – this is a case of police trying to talk one person into surrendering. The original call, he says, involved a concern that the person might be seeking to harm themselves. More as we get it. 2:38 PM: Adding photo, which was taken at 42nd/California – the house in the photo is NOT the one where this is happening – people are being kept well back from the scene. 3:04 PM UPDATE: The situation has ended and authorities are dispersing. We have been told it’s ending not because something was resolved but because there’s no further grounds to continue – no further danger, apparently. The roads are reopening.
Seattle Parks is presenting “Big Day of Play” a week from tomorrow at Magnuson Park. Before you say “North end? Too far!” check this out – Parks points out today that they’re offering free shuttles from community centers including Southwest CC and Delridge CC in West Seattle. The schedule for the “Big Day of Play” events 9:30 am-5 pm Aug. 28 (including stage performances starting with the popular band Recess Monkey) is here; the schedule of free shuttle buses is here. There’s also a 3-on-3 basketball tournament (info here) and a fun run too.
Three quick shopping notes for tomorrow — As announced last month, Saturday is closing day for Admiral Safeway, soon to be torn down for a project centered on a new store almost twice the size of the current one. Safeway has told us the store will be open till midnight tomorrow night. Shoppers are discussing its closeout sales right now in the WSB Forums … Saturday also is the NEW closing day for Friends and Company in The Junction, the rubber stamps/craft store that is consolidating operations at its newer Issaquah location. That’s a few days earlier than first announced. … Tomorrow’s a big day for shopping in The Junction overall, with more than 40 merchants participating in the second annual end-of-summer “Big Bonanza” sale – with discounts and prizes. Here’s the list (which includes WSB sponsors Bin 41, Brunette Mix, Cupcake Royale, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, and Square One Books).
(Photos added 3:33 pm)
Just got word here from co-owner Melinda Nguyen that Pho Aroma (at Delridge/Findlay) is now officially open for business. Read more about Pho Aroma in our preview story from last month. ADDED 3:33 PM: Dropped by for a few photos. Owners Melinda (center with glasses) and Scott (to the left of Melinda) have lots of family members there to help and celebrate today!
ADDED 7:31 PM: Just noticed that the Delridge Grassroots Leadership website has a scan of the Pho Aroma menu!
In addition to tonight’s outdoor concert at The Mount (previewed at the end of this story), three more big events on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar:
YOUNGSTOWN SHOWCASE: Young artists’ work is showcased during “Youth Out Loud” 6-8 pm tonight at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center – free! The preview promises film, music, photography, and more.
Meantime, young actors will be on stage in The Junction all weekend:
(Photo courtesy Edgar Riebe of Captive Eye Media)
‘THE BIRDS’ AT ARTSWEST: Young actors who’ve spent much of the summer in classes and rehearsals at ArtsWest are now performing Aristophanes’ “The Birds,” the contemporary adaptation of a 2,400-year-old story rife with social and political commentary as well as comedy, with shows scheduled tonight and tomorrow at 7:30 pm, Sunday at 3 pm.
‘HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING,’ FINAL WEEKEND: Catch this one yet? Twelfth Night Productions (WSB sponsor) performers tell the musical tale of climbing the corporate ladder, with three more performances at West Seattle High School Theater – 7:30 pm tonight and tomorrow, 3 pm Sunday.
Wide-eyed wonder and all-out jumping for joy were alternating behaviors for the hundreds of young showgoers in Thursday night’s record-breaking crowd for the Admiral Neighborhood Association‘s Summer Concerts at Hiawatha series. This time it was a double-bill of kids-music specialists, beginning with West Seattle’s own Caspar Babypants, who as usual mixed storytelling with song – and audience participation, as you’ll see and hear in our video clip:
After watching all that jumping and bouncing from the stage, Caspar Babypants’ Chris Ballew took a leap himself:
Afterward – the rock-star-turned-kids’-music-icon sold CDs and granted autograph requests at one of the lawn-ringing tables:
By the way, if you enjoy Ballew’s other work – with the Presidents of the United States of America – you can watch him sing a selection of POTUSA songs at a benefit concert at Camp Long at 5 pm Sunday, during this weekend’s Arts-in-Nature Festival at Camp Long ($25 concert tickets available here) – and earlier Sunday, as part of the festival, it’s a Caspar Babypants performance at Camp Long Lodge. Meantime, we spotted another local luminary offstage at Thursday night’s concert:
Radio-to-web personality Marty Riemer was there with his entire family entourage. Back toward the stage, the intermission between acts featured ballroom-dancing lessons for elegant young dancers:
Then back to the rock ‘n’ roll. You gotta love a band that sings “when 8 takes a nap it’s infinity”:
That’s the Board of Education with at least one West Seattleite in their ranks. One more note about the night – WestSide Baby was there, collecting diapers:
ANA provided free face painters and popsicles as special treats. Next Thursday night, it’s Camille Bloom – same time (6:30 pm), same price (free). And there’s more outdoor music in West Seattle tomorrow night – the third of this summer’s four Outdoor Concerts at The Mount at Providence Mount St. Vincent – Danny Vernon’s Illusion of Elvis. Concert’s at 6, and free; come early and buy dinner starting at 5, if you want – fried chicken, burgers, hot dogs will be available. (And for kids – a clown and face-painter.)
A change at the top in the 34th District State House Representative Position 2 results, after the latest vote count made public by King County Elections: Now Joe Fitzgibbon is ahead of Mike Heavey, by 186 votes out of more than 22,000 counted in this race so far. Again, the finishing order won’t change what happens next – both Fitzgibbon and Heavey are going to the general election, since it’s extremely unlikely that the 3,000-plus-vote gap between them and #3 Geoffrey “Mac” McElroy would completely close – but for politics-watchers, it’s interesting to keep an eye on the daily updates until the election is certified at month’s end. No change in the King County Council District 8 race, which has gaps big enough that none are likely – it’ll be Joe McDermott vs. Diana Toledo in November.
“Up” is Saturday night’s feature at West Seattle Outdoor Movies – remember this is now the second-to-last one of the summer, rather than the last one, because “Star Trek” was rained out two weeks ago and is rescheduled for August 28th. This Saturday night, not only will you see “Up,” if you come a bit early you’re also invited to a free barbecue provided by West Seattle Christian Church. Pastor Dan Jacobs says they’re planning on “hot dogs, burgers, veggie burgers, chips, bottled water… serving beginning at 6:30 until it’s all gone!” (WSCC is part of the regular volunteer crew that makes the movies happen – they’re just steps from the Hotwire Online Coffeehouse [WSB sponsor] courtyard that’s home to the big screen. They also sell classic movie concessions to raise $ for charity.) WSCC and its preschool are among the sponsors for this Saturday’s movie, with the rest of the roster including WSB sponsors Ventana Construction and Jackson, Morgan & Hunt, PLLC, plus Bakery Nouveau and Doug Baldwin/Windermere Real Estate. One more note: Seattle Tilth is bringing kid-friendly activities like worm bins, interactive games, and “light microscopy,” according to movie mastermind Lora Lewis of Hotwire. See you there!
SDOT‘s out with another one of those big-event traffic-alert roundups – including the SW Webster shutdown (west of Delridge) on Saturday afternoon for Picnic at the (Southwest) Precinct – read on to see what’s happening where this weekend around the city:Read More
Residents and visitors at The Kenney got a summer serenade on the northwest lawn tonight – that’s Ed Hartman on the marimba, during the retirement center’s annual summer barbecue party. Here’s the view looking over the roses and dahlias:
As reported here earlier this month, The Kenney is currently revising its redevelopment plan – two years after announcing the expansion project – and promising to have a new one out for community consideration within a month or two, before the official review process resumes.
Many have been asking about the officer who was taken to the hospital after the crash yesterday afternoon at California and Brandon. We in turn have been asking police how he’s doing – and finally got an update a little while ago: According to Det. Jeff Kappel in the SPD media unit, the officer turned out to be just bruised and shaken up, and will be returning to work tomorrow. (The driver with whom he collided did not require hospitalization.) P.S. We also heard tonight from Lt. Norm James re: the incident to which the officer was responding when the crash happened. Apparently a parking-enforcement officer spotted a domestic-violence incident happening; the officer was “advanced on” at one point by the suspect but was not, Lt. James says, assaulted or hurt.
CPR CLASS: One of those “learn to do something you hope you’ll never HAVE TO do” things – but it can sure add to your peace of mind. Just got a reminder that C & P Coffee is hosting this: CPR Seattle is teaching CPR & First Aid for Infants, Children and Adults – tonight, 5612 California Ave SW, $45. 206-933-3125
KAYAK CLINIC: Got a note from the folks at Mountain to Sound Outfitters (WSB sponsor) and Alki Kayak Tours about a special event starting in just a few hours:
Tonight … world-renowned paddler and Eddyline Rep Ethan Ebersold will be on hand at Alki Kayak Tours to exhibit next year’s Eddyline Samba. Come meet a pro and learn some skills from 6-8 with a Paddle Stroke Clinic and the first opportunity to purchase our practically new demo fleet! Check out their kayaks at eddyline.com
Alki Kayak Tours is at Seacrest Pier.
On the day that longtime West Seattle entrepreneur and Rotarian Ken Wise was remembered — a crowd packed Fauntleroy Church for his 11 am memorial service – a proclamation from King County Executive Dow Constantine honors Mr. Wise. See it here (thanks to Brian Waid for sharing it). Mr. Wise died of cancer on Aug. 1st at age 79.

“We’re not the center of your universe yet, but we will be,” quips Virginia Bowen, owner of Seattle Yarn (5633 California SW). This global takeover has begun with the launch of Seattle Yarn’s new online store, which offers many of the yarns, needles, hooks and books featured in the store.
Employee Marguerite Lynch (at right in the top photo with Virginia), who created the online venture, says: “We did this because people were requesting it. Our customers would bring their friends and family who were visiting from out of town and who still wanted to be able to shop our store when they went back home.”

We were sitting down at a Delridge coffee shop with Laura Bermes from the board of Family Promise of Seattle – the West Seattle-headquartered shelter for homeless families, profiled here previously – for what we had envisioned as a simple “how are things going?” story, when she dropped a bombshell: Family Promise has just closed its doors to go “on hiatus,” and won’t reopen until it has raised at least $90,000.
That means, Bermes says, there is currently no shelter for homeless families between downtown Seattle and Kent.
This is not just a matter of closing a facility and laying off some staff – Family Promise has hundreds of volunteers because of a unique partnership with 18 congregations, including several outside West Seattle. It does not have a physical overnight shelter, but rather rotates families between those partners’ churches, one week at a time, with each partner housing and feeding the family during “their week” – not proselytizing, simply serving, and caring.
A month after captivating the West Seattle Summer Fest crowd, Caspar Babypants is back on a hometown stage for the Admiral Neighborhood Association‘s Summer Concerts at Hiawatha series (co-sponsored by WSB) tonight, 6:30 pm at Hiawatha Community Center‘s east lawn, free, with The Board of Education. ANA president Katy Walum says the previously announced burger truck won’t be there after all – logistics didn’t work out – but the Full Tilt Ice Cream-selling “cooler on wheels” will be, with a larger supply! plus ANA is offering free “frozen treats, and 2 free face-painters will be there. Most important of all: Please bring diapers to donate to WestSide Baby. Katy says the sizes needed most right now are newborn and pull-ups.
