West Seattle, Washington
22 Tuesday
Saturday morning, dozens of homes lost power for hours near Fairmount Playfield. Today we followed up with Seattle City Light to see what caused the outage. SCL spokesperson Jenn Strang replied, “A raccoon.” (Wildlife-related outages are not unusual, but more often it’s a bird on the wire than a mammal.)
Police are investigating an incident Sunday morning that was initially reported as a stabbing and is also categorized as a robbery. They were called to an apartment building in the 3200 block of SW Avalon Way and found a 29-year-old man with one stab wound to his abdomen. According to the report narrative we obtained from SPD, the victim’s girlfriend had called them and said it happened two hours earlier. The victim himself couldn’t provide details when SPD and SFD initially talked with him, but the girlfriend said he had encountered the attacker in the alley behind the complex and that the man tried to rob him, saying to “give him everything.” The victim refused, his girlfriend said, so the would-be robber stabbed him and ran away. The victim subsequently went to a friend’s apartment, where he met up with his girlfriend, and they called 911 two hours later. Police eventually were able to talk with the victim at the hospital, and he told them it actually happened around 2 am, as he walked back to the building from the 35th/Avalon 7-Eleven, and that the attacker/would-be robber asked him for a dollar before stabbing him. He said he delayed calling 911 because he was trying to “tough it out.” The only description he provided, per the police narrative, was “possibly a light skinned or white male, wearing a hoodie drawn tight around his face, with a dark-colored vest on top.” If you have any information, the SPD # is 24-338436.
Our video shows the local band Better As Brass entertaining shoppers in The Junction during one of last year’s Hometown Holidays Shop Late Thursdays. The band is scheduled to be back this Thursday (December 5) – with a special busking beneficiary, explains BAB’s Kevin Freitas:
Last December, after we played in the Junction for the holidays, a neighbor was inspired by seeing us and got in touch to join the band. She’s been a joyous addition that we’ve all loved getting to know over the year. A few weeks ago, however, a medical emergency put her in the hospital, where she’s still in recovery/rehab. Please join us 7-9 pm in front of the Key Bank in the Junction, where we’ll play our hearts out for her and, if you’re at all able, please considering donating. Anything we earn from our busk will go directly to her as gift cards to help with pharmacy and other misc. costs. Thanks, West Seattle!
That’s just one of multiple reasons to visit The Junction on Thursday night – among others, The Silver Belles will be caroling again, too,

Christmas-light season is officially on. The Menashe Family’s home at 5605 Beach Drive SW is ablaze in lights – our video above is a minute-long look at most of it. One aspect that’ll catch your eye, the transportation features – train, plane, helicopter, among others.
Lots of Christmasy characters inhabit almost every square inch of the yard. And by the sidewalk, the traditional mailbox for letters to Santa Claus:
Santa himself will visit in two weeks, the night of December 14 (as noted in the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide), with reindeer accompanying him. (He’s already represented on the north side of the display.)
We’ll be showcasing lights from around the community again this season, starting tomorrow (Monday) – if yours are extra-festive, or you see some that are, please let us know! westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you!
If you’re going to sing “O Tannenbaum” under a Christmas tree, no better place to do it in West Seattle than Prost! That’s one of the songs local musician (and renowned announcer) Tom Hutyler sang there tonight in honor of the official first night of the bar’s Christmas tree.
P.S. Other tree lightings ahead this week include the Our Lady of Guadalupe tree during “Light Up the Night“ on Friday and The Junction’s (somewhat diminished, but illuminated anyway) tree during the Holiday Festival on Saturday.
Two notes in West Seattle Crime Watch tonight:
STOLEN INFINITI: Matt reports his Infiniti QX80 SUV was stolen from 16th and Barton at 3 this morning.
“It’s black and was just washed,” he adds. Plate CGU8665, police report # 24-338373. Call 911 if you find it.
POLICE-COMMUNITY MEETING REMINDER: Got concerns/questions for local police? Want to find out more about the Unified Care Team‘s work with encampments? That’s all on the agenda for the Thursday (December 5) meeting of the Southwest Precinct Crime Prevention Council (if you show up, you’re instantly part of it), 6:30 pm at the precinct, 2300 SW Webster.

Grammy-winning local music legends Hanseroth Twins (best known as longtime band members with Brandi Carlile) played a packed in-store show at Easy Street Records on Black Friday night, in support of the brothers’ new album Vera.
WSB contributor Jason Grotelueschen was on the scene (albeit in the back row) and said the twins’ harmonies and songs were on full display at the show, and they were joined onstage by musician Akira Galaxy (based in Los Angeles but with local ties, and the niece of Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam), and also shared the finale with Carlile herself:
Jason also shared a few videos from the performance:
After the show, the twins did a meet-and-greet with fans. They announced from the stage how grateful they were that fans at the show had purchased the entire stock of albums that they had onsite, and thanked attendees for their support.
Thanks to everyone who sends bird photos – enabling our first gallery in a while!
James Tilley photographed those Barrow’s Goldeneyes at Jack Block Park; that’s where Christopher Boffoli saw this Merganser.

(Photo courtesy West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails)
West Seattle’s biggest green treasure is now alive online as well as in real life. The folks working to help you learn about, enjoy, and protect the West Duwamish Greenbelt sent this announcement today:
There’s a new way to engage with the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails group (WDGT) and explore the trails in Seattle’s largest remaining contiguous forest.
The West Duwamish Greenbelt covers 500 acres spanning more than four miles north to south. A large network of trails lead from the Duwamish Longhouse and Highland Park Way to Puget Park, Pigeon Point Park, and Riverview Playfield, passing the South Seattle College campus. As part of WDGT’s ongoing commitment to promote use of the greenbelt, restore the forest, and develop sustainable trails, we’ve developed a new website at wdgtrails.org.
The new website makes it easier for visitors to learn about the trails, with links to an updated map and articles about the history and ecology of the space.
The goal of this website is to not just share information about the trails and connect the community with the West Duwamish Greenbelt but also to tell the story of the greenbelt from the perspective of the community and other trail users.
This living website will be actively updated with new content, including history articles and information about guided hikes, volunteer opportunities, and other events.
Open Call for Contributions
Do you have a story of the West Duwamish Greenbelt? A memory of playing in the forest as a kid or knowledge of the history of the land? Insights into the life and geology of the area?
We welcome your contributions to the History and Nature articles, either writing your own or reaching out to our team and giving us an interview for an article.
The new website also features community-contributed photos. Whether it’s scenes of the forest, bird shots, macro photography, or snapshots of hikes, you can submit your own photos to share with the community.
Send us your contributions via the Get Involved page or to wdgtrails@gmail.com.
Who is WDGT?
WDGT is a collection of neighbors who guide creation, maintenance and promotion of walking and hiking trails in the greenbelt. We have been working in partnership with the Duwamish Tribe and the Ridge to River coalition to draw people to the forested land. We meet monthly on the second Tuesday of the month. All are invited. See Get Involved for the time, place, and medium of the next meeting.
Hosting for the website was funded by the Neighborhood Matching Fund from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, and the website was developed by WDGT volunteer and Puget Ridge resident Jay Speidell. The same grant funded a current exhibit, “Seattle’s Forest,” at the Southwest Seattle Historical Society’s Log House Museum, 3003 61st Ave. SW.
What’s happened at the Fauntleroy YMCA since the possibility of closure shocked the community almost a year ago? It’s time for a progress report, says the YMCA (WSB sponsor), with changes over the year including expanded hours and programming. So, we’re reminding you, that progress report is expected at a “town hall”-style meeting at 6 pm Wednesday (December 4) in the Fellowship Hall of Fauntleroy Church (which shares its location with the Fauntleroy Y, at 9140 California SW). Last January, the Y convened an initial town-hall meeting about the challenges and needs, so you can come see – and ask questions about/provide feedback on – what’s happened since then.
If you’ve been to ArtsWest to see the holiday musical “Snowed In (Again),” that’s playwright Corinne Park-Buffelen at left in our photo. Corinne visited HomeStreet Bank (4022 SW Alaska; WSB sponsor) to celebrate the conclusion of ArtsWest’s monthlong showcase at the bank; she and HomeStreet’s Andrew Tento drew two winners for pairs of tickets to see “Snowed In (Again).” Every month HomeStreet’s West Seattle branch showcases a different community business or organization, concluding with a prize drawing – you can enter just by visiting the branch, which is open Mondays-Thursdays 9 am-5 pm, Fridays 9 am-6 pm. The featured business for December is Meeples Games.

Next Saturday (December 7), girls from high schools around the city will spend the day playing flag football downtown. Among them will be West Seattle High School‘s new team.
Parent club manager Pamela Quadros sent that photo with word that the team had made history two weeks ago with WSHS’s first-ever girls’ flag-football practice. She says students Thea and Maggie Harnish and Charlee Cummings founded the team, and that they’re getting support from organizations including the Seahawks. They also express thanks to coach Kris Smith, WSHS athletic director Corey Sorenson, and Underdog for running the girls’ flag-football league (which also includes Chief Sealth International High School – here’s the full schedule for next week and beyond).
Two more reader reports in West Seattle Crime Watch:
CAR PROWLER ON VIDEO: Chris sent the video from Seaview, explaining, “At 04:33 last night this bundle of holiday cheer broke into my truck and stole a small bag of tools. Good reminder not to leave anything in your vehicle.” Placeholder report #, pending permanent SPD number, is T00018216.
MAIL-THEFT ALERT: Received via text:
I wanted to let the residents know of mail theft along 16th Ave SW in West Seattle. The same street as South Seattle Community College. Our mail boxes are left open and again I caught someone at 6 a.m. going in mail boxes, I yelled, and he cursed me out and ran into a waiting white small sedan. He had on a black jacket with a hood. They come between 12 and 6:30 a.m. – please check your mail daily!!!
Thanks for the photos! Saturday’s sunshine concluded with another sunset spectacle. The photo above is from Lael; the one below is from Gene Pavola:

(WSB photo, 2023 Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast)
One week from today – Saturday, December 7th – brings some of the biggest events of the holiday season. It all starts at 7 am in the Alki Masonic Center (40th/Edmunds) with the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle‘s annual pancake breakfast. $8 in advance or $10 at the door – and kids under 10 eat free! – gets you pancakes, Husky Deli ham, orange juice, coffee, and tea. Free Santa photos! Raffles! Benefit wreath, ornament, and nut sales! And you’re welcome to bring new unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots (with active-duty Marines there to gratefully accept them). Show up whatever time works for you between 7 am and 11 am next Saturday morning. The entrance is right off the (free) parking lot on the south side of the Masonic Center (and again, you can buy your discounted advance ticket right now by going here).
P.S. The Kiwanis Club also is raising money for its community work right now via an online auction, with items including gift certificates/cards for local businesses, from coffee to clothing (and beyond!). Go here to browse and bid!
Small Business Saturday continues at independent businesses all over West Seattle (and the rest of the nation). We have photos and a travelogue – shop-a-logue? – from Dan Jacobs of the Admiral Neighborhood Association:
Small Business Saturday in the Admiral District celebrates the best of our local small businesses while enjoying the charm and creativity of the neighborhood on a beautiful day. We started our day by grabbing brunch at Admiral Neighborhood Association partner Arthur’s, known for its fresh and locally inspired dishes as well as giving back to neighbors in need. Next up is a stop in at ANA partner Bebop Waffle Shop, who will be serving up creative and comforting sweet or savory waffles for just one more month. Get them while you still can!
Heading up California Ave, we enjoyed some of the unique Admiral shopping experiences at some of our local favorites. First up, things are busy at Hoste, which features a curated selection of stylish home goods.
Then down California, stopping in at Alair to browse through some unique gifts and local favorites.
Next up is Wend Jewelry to admire Wendy’s beautifully handcrafted pieces, and then stopping in at Soirée for some tasty culinary delights.
Other indie Admiral businesses include longtime WSB sponsor West Seattle Runner (2743 California SW), where, among other things, folks have been picking up their Seattle Marathon bibs today (the big race is tomorrow).
WSB contributors are out roaming the Small Business Saturday sights and deals – here’s what we’re finding in The Junction:
STOP ‘N’ SHOP: You might remember Angela from Funky Jane’s – we photographed her today at the Center for Active Living‘s Stop ‘n’ Shop, where the SBS deal is 20 percent off everything, till 4 pm today and again 10 am-4 pm Sunday (California/Oregon).
FLEURT: Tax-free all day, with mini-Christmas tree if you spend $75 or more. (4536 California SW)
CARMILIA’S: We had early word of their plans in today’s “what’s happening” list but here’s what our contributor was told: “Giftables 25% off – jewelry, gloves, hats. Sale rack additional 25% off. Open until 6 pm. Last-chance rack $99, according to proprietor Linda Walsh.”
MYSTERY MADE: That’s proprietor Cory, who says his shop is not having a sale but they do have Rainier Beer on hand for thirsty holiday shoppers (of age, of course) … they’re at 4537 California SW.
GIFT WRAP AT COMPASS: Purchases at Mystery Made or Carmilia’s, or for the Compass Giving Tree (noted in our Holiday Guide), get you free wrap – that’s Mara Haveson at left and Compass Real Estate team members. (4531 California SW)
POP-UP MARKET AT JET CITY LABS: All weekend, Jet City Labs is hosting multiple artists and vendors in pop-up markets (4547 California SW), as noted in our list. Until 4 today and 10-2 tomorrow: “Shop jewelry from The ADHD Witch, knits from JKrochets, photos from Jon Dun, and more!”
EMERALD WATER ANGLERS: Remember they’re now at 4707 California SW: “20% off select waders and rods. 30% off discontinued Patagonia gear. 30% on sunglasses, select styles. Open till 6 pm.”
WUGPRINTS AT VAIN: Another pop-up – owner Joshua illustrates all the work, just started in June 2024. He’s holding his most popular postcard. He’s at VAIN (4513 California SW) till 3 pm.
We’ll say it again – shop small biz EVERY day to keep the community strong!
Two vehicle reports this morning:
STOLEN PICKUP TRUCK: The photo and report are from Brian:
Our truck was just stolen last night in the Diamond parking lot behind Puerto Vallarta! 1987 Ford F-250 single cab.
We’ll add the plate number when we get it.
ABANDONED BLUE HYUNDAI: The photo and report are from Maya:
My husband and I were out walking our dogs and came upon this car, still running in the alleyway on Juneau between 34th and 35th. Door locks had been broken and obviously stolen. California plates, blue Hyundai. Has been reported to SPD, but maybe someone will recognize it.
They saw it around 8:30, so it may have since been moved/towed – if so and it’s yours, check with police.
9:39 AM: Thanks to Kersti Muul for the tip. Orcas are southbound in the Bainbridge-Seattle ferry lanes, “spread out.” She says they’re Southern Residents.
11:27 AM: In addition to the updates in comments (thank you!), Jay texted to say the orcas are off Lincoln Park.
11:33 AM: Another texter (we’re at 206-293-6302, any time) reports “large pod of orcas south of Fauntleroy Ferry.”
