It didn’t have to be nighttime for the lanterns, and smiles, to shine brightly during the Children’s Moonlight Festival today at the Vietnamese Cultural Center in West Seattle. We arrived just in time for the lantern parade:

That was the culmination of today’s three-hour event at the center, the traditional autumn celebration known as Tết Nhi Đồng, featuring activities, games, and treats including moon cake.

Group photos are a tradition at center events.

The center’s longtime director is Lee Bui:

If you’ve never visited, the center is often open to visitors on Saturday afternoons (2236 SW Orchard).

Less than two weeks until the Fauntleroy Fall Festival – time to start planning your cake, if you’re up for baking one! From Judy Pickens:

The judging of decorated cakes and an old-fashioned cake walk are popular activities at the Fauntleroy Fall Festival, this year on Sunday, October 21, 2:00-5:00 pm, and cake donations are needed for both. Demonstrate your creativity by decorating a cake with a fall, Fauntleroy, or West Seattle theme. Judging will be by level of difficulty and both adults and kids are encouraged to enter. If decorating isn’t your thing, simply bake and frost a donation for the cake walk. It can be just one layer, a small sheet cake, or a cluster of cupcakes. Plan to bring your creation to Fellowship Hall in Fauntleroy Church by 1:00 pm on festival Sunday.

The festival happens in and around the church and schoolhouse, across the street from each other (and there’s a crossing guard during the festival!) at 9131 and 9140 California SW.

One month and one day until the West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival! 10 am to 2 pm Sunday, October 28th, in the street in the heart of The Junction. It’s multifaceted fun – the Farmers’ Market, harvest/fall-themed kids’ activities, a costume parade, trick-or-treating, and a benefit chili cookoff! The chili cookoff field is set – you buy, you vote, proceeds go to the West Seattle Food Bank: This year’s contenders are Elliott Bay Brewing, Husky Deli, Easy Street Café, The Westy, Duos Catering, Pecos Pit (WSB sponsor), Girls Gone BBQ, The Bridge, and Shadowland are this year’s competitors. Did you know you can’t use food stamps to buy diapers and most day cares require you bring your own? An undiapered child is a health and safety concern that affects our entire community. That’s why we’re holding a diaper drive in support of WestSide Baby.

It’s a little chilly, a little cloudy – technically still summer for another two weeks but it’s really feeling like fall. So – it’s time to talk about your opportunities for being part of this year’s West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival! 10 am-2 pm Sunday, October 28th, in the street, in the heart of The Junction. New here? Here’s how the West Seattle Junction Association explains it:

Now in our seventh year, the Junction’s Harvest Festival has become a favorite event for West Seattle. With California Ave closed, the streets are filled with colorful farmers and local vendors, fun art activities for kids supported by West Seattle businesses and community groups, plus a costume parade lead by West Seattle High’s marching band, the Farmers Market Applepalooza and a root beer garden. The Harvest Festival is good community fun!

Just one week until the next Mountain Fest at Camp Long! Here’s the reminder from Seattle Parks:

Join Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Friends of Camp Long for Camp Long Mountain Fest, a celebration of Seattle’s vibrant outdoor community and Camp Long’s place in mountaineering history. This free, family-friendly event will take place at the Camp Long Environmental Learning Center (5200 35th Ave. SW) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2018.

All participants of Mountain Fest will enjoy a day of free access to rock climbing, rappelling, mountain-themed games and activities, and opportunities for nature-based learning. Event participants can develop outdoor living skills and experience an array of programs offered by Camp Long and other local organizations.

Mountain Fest activities will be made accessible to all people, regardless of their experience level, allowing beginners, intermediate, and advanced climbers and adventurers of all ages to enjoy the event*.

The goal of Mountain Fest is to continue the tradition started by Judge William G. Long and Clark Schurman, two of the founders of Camp Long, of providing access to outdoor recreation and education to all people, particularly underserved youth.

*Space for climbing and ropes course is limited, so we encourage early arrival to the festival and sign-up. Waivers are required for all climbing activities and will be available at the lodge. Participants need to wear closed-toed shoes. High ropes course is limited to height and weight that fit harnesses and to those who have the physical ability to participate safely.

Joining a breakdance workshop with the DogPound Crew – above are Dan, Robert, and Sammy – was one of the many ways to spend the second and final day of the 2018 Arts In Nature Festival, presented at Camp Long by the Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association. The dancers were inside the park’s historic lodge, but much more was happening outside – especially at the cabins:

Above, at Cabin 1, Degenerate Art Ensemble‘s “Skeleton Flower Seed Ceremony” invited people to anonymously share their stories of dealing with challenges. Below, at Cabin 7, Paul Kikuchi presented an interactive sound installation in collaboration with his brother Joel Kikuchi:

Visitors at “Robotic Ensemble” played traditional Japanese instruments remotely using low-fi robotic hands, blending with pre-recorded soundscapes. Meantime, at Cabin 8:

This is the third year that DNDA has presented the festival, whose founding organization Nature Consortium became part of DNDA in 2016.

Dog Day @ West Seattle Beer and Music Festival

1:43 PM: The final afternoon of the first-ever West Seattle Beer and Music Festival is under way, and you’re invited to bring your dog today. The spotlight right now is on the City Dog Magazine Cover Dog Model Search, on stage here at the Alki Masonic Center in The Junction (4736 40th SW), with the $10 entry fee for that competition benefiting a rescue organization – and getting your dog primped for the occasion with experts to assist.

It’s not mandatory that you have a canine companion, of course – you do have to be 21+ to enter. If you were here Friday and/or Saturday, you are invited back today, too. Even if you’re not a major beer aficionado, other beverages are available courtesy of local purveyors – for example, Jay and Mike from Whisky West in Morgan Junction (WSB sponsor) is here with a cocktail they’re calling “Bring Us a Shrubbery”:

In it – Noble Oak bourbon, house-made strawberry shrub, Montenegro, simple syrup, and basil. Find it (and other local purveyors’ offerings in the Spirit Lounge area.) The festival continues until 6 pm; ticket info’s here.

2:21 PM: The dog judging’s under way now; host Joey Jeannot‘s announcing the contest onstage. He’s also pointed out that today’s food offerings include tacos from Matador as well as hot dogs and Sisters and Brothers Nashville-style fried-chicken sandwiches.

Just back from Camp Long, where the first day of the Arts In Nature Festival continues until about 8:30 tonight. One of the unusual sights – Aaron Haba and more than 900 marigold plants. Tomorrow, they’ll be offered free to festivalgoers, and he hopes people will send him photos when they bloom – his plan is to turn the photos into a collage. We also noted West Seattle artist Natalie Fobes‘s work “Spring/Fall Convergence”:

While our photographer was at the festival, we received a note from Natalie, who explained:

This eight-piece exhibit celebrates the nature around us.

Each mobile is made of a single photograph that is printed on the front and back of one sheet of paper. Fall is represented on one side with Spring on the other.

As the wind catches the mobiles, two-dimensional photography becomes a kinetic three-dimensional experience for the viewer.

For the last couple years I’ve tried to figure out how to make photography more interactive and more than two-dimensional prints on a wall. For this exhibit I used over 800 fishing swivels and jewelry findings to put the mobiles together. (My apologies to the fishing community for buying all the size 10 swivels at Big 5 multiple times in the last few months!)

Thanks to the DNDA for choosing me as one of the artists for the Festival.

Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association, now parent organization to the festival-founding Nature Consortium, presents Arts In Nature, an experience for creating as well as viewing.

All ages are welcome to do that. And the arts are spoken and written as well as visual:

11:48 AM: The rainshower’s over on Puget Ridge and spectators continue wandering the 11th annual West Seattle Car Show on the north side of the South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor) campus! Show admission is free and you can get lunch for only $5:

The Kiwanis Club of West Seattle is grilling burgers and hot dogs this year – you can get one with chips and water for only $5. That’s also what you’ll pay for tasting (five tastes, we hear) inside the Northwest Wine Academy, adjacent to the show zone:

Free kids’ activities inside, too. Back to the cars – bright colors under the gray skies!

West Seattle Autoworks and Swedish Automotive (WSB sponsors) are co-presenting the show this year, and proceeds are supporting SSC’s Automotive Technology program (which you can tour while you’re here) – you can help by buying 50/50 Raffle tickets ($1 each or 25 for $20) at the show tent on the east side of the lot – T-shirts for sale too, plus that’s where you can cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award. (Trophies get handed out starting at 2, so get here by then!)

The first-ever West Seattle Beer and Music Festival has begun! The boards up outside the Alki Masonic Center in The Junction tell you what’s happening – including the featured restaurants and breweries.

It’s not just brewers who are in the spotlight, it’s also local beer specialists like The Beer Junction:

Tomorrow evening, it begins: The first-ever West Seattle Beer and Music Festival, four sessions over three days at the Alki Masonic Center in The Junction (4736 40th SW). Here are the highlights at a glance:

As the organizers explain, “Our goal is to provide craft beer drinkers with an amazing selection of unique beers so they can discover new and old favorites. … Not only will there be craft beer, the festival will feature ‘Sips and Bites’ from our local culinary stars pairing up with festival brewmasters and funky local bands & Dj’s keeping us movin’.” It’s a “cashless” festival – food and drink tokens are included in the ticket prices; see the options here – including VIP levels if you’re interested – for the Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon sessions. By this weekend, the air is expected to be clearer, and that’s a good thing given the number of big outdoor events on the schedule! Among them: The 19th annual Arts in Nature Festival at Camp Long, presented by Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association. The festival spans both Saturday and Sunday, with visual and performing artists all around the sprawling, forest-and-meadow West Seattle park. As explained here, this isn’t just a festival where you go to watch and listen – it’s also a festival where you experience and create. (And don’t miss what’s happening in and around the cabins!) You will be inspired and stirred on Saturday night by musical headliners Total Experience Gospel Choir, led by Rev. Pat Wright, who’s talking about retirement, so this might be one of your last chances to see and hear her! Still time to get to this year’s Duwamish River Festival (at Duwamish Waterway Park, 7900 10th Ave. S., until 5 pm), where you can learn about the river by getting out onto it, or talking to people about it.

That’s James Rasmussen, coordinator of the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition, from whom we found out there’s a community meeting Wednesday about June’s barge fire on the river. (More on that in a separate story.) Along with information, the festival is also a cultural celebration:

Still a lot of summer left – with big events ahead, including the 2018 West Seattle Car Show, presented again this year by West Seattle Autoworks and Swedish Automotive (both WSB sponsors). It’s happening 10 am-3 pm Saturday, August 25th, in the huge lot on the north side of the South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor) campus. If you have a vehicle to show off, pre-registration is closed but you’re welcome to show up starting at 8 am on show day and sign up on the spot (info’s here). For visitors, admission is free and this year will include:

*SSC Automotive Technology students (whose program is supported by show proceeds) will be doing bulb safety checks

6:58 PM: Evening is here and the final frenetic few hours of Sub Pop Records’ 30th-birthday party SPF30 are beginning. The crowd is thickening by the minute, and some are watching from the water:

Mudhoney‘s set is minutes away on the Harsh Realm stage at 57th/Alki. Shabazz Palaces is wrapping their set on the east side of the Bathhouse. More to come!

SPF30, 1ST REPORT: Sub Pop party is rocking Alki, rain and shine

1:36 PM: At the Punky Stage on Alki Playfield, Caspar Babypants sang “Here Comes the Sun” shortly after opening his set at SPF30 –

It seems to have worked – we’re in a sunbreak as we type, starting our coverage of the huge Sub Pop Records 30th-birthday party, which is on at 4 stages (plus beer gardens, tents, and more) until 10 pm. The playfield is paradise for kids – along the west side, a big gathering of bouncy toys:

In the middle of the playfield, vendor/community tents include Alki Elementary PTA, steps from their school (here’s what they’re selling):

And the C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor) tent makes its debut, with cold brew:

Our coverage is just getting started. If you’re headed here, a few things you should know – really, don’t even try to park within a mile of Alki – we tried it before 1 pm and can vouch for the neighborhoods south of Admiral being full up. Meantime, Carolyn Newman sends a photo of the wait for the Water Taxi shuttle at Seacrest:

Also among the organizations in mid-playfield booths, the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, beneficiaries of some fundraising today including the guitar that’s being auctioned … demonstrated here by West Seattle’s highest-ranking politician:

3:23 PM UPDATE: We’ve just wandered the rest of the site. Most of the food trucks are along 59th just south of Alki Ave (with a few others scattered elsewhere):

59th is also where you’ll find bike parking, on the tennis court:

Along Alki Ave. are the three stages – Loma just performed at the Flippity-Flop stage on the east side of Alki Bathhouse:

Nearby, just west of the KEXP booth, a water-bottle-refilling station:

In general, it’s not too crowded yet – still room to roam from the streets to the spectator zones. And the weather has behaved for the past few hours.

5:17 PM: The crowd is building. Here’s a quick clip of Clipping, last hour:

Each of the three main stages has two acts ahead, including the Fastbacks, scheduled to get going about now at the Loser stage (west side of Alki Bathhouse), Hot Snakes also set to have started minutes ago at the Harsh Realm stage on Alki Ave. at 57th. Meantime, transportation is still busy – someone we know was passed by enough full Route 50 buses to give up and walk here.

Rain or shine, Delridge Day 2018 is on! Until 3 pm, lots of fun – and free food:

The hot dogs are courtesy of the Seattle Police Foundation, which sponsors the citywide Precinct Picnics, including the one that’s part of Delridge Day. You can also get a look at SPD specialty units’ gear, including the Dive Team:

Find out about community groups, too, including the West Seattle Amateur Radio Club:

Other groups, organizations, and agencies include Sound Transit, which is there to answer your questions about West Seattle light-rail planning. And you can enjoy music, dance, and other performances – see the schedule in our calendar. It’s all happening in the park at Delridge/Genesee/26th (with co-sponsors including WSB).

One more reminder that tomorrow also brings this year’s Delridge Day – with kids’ field games planned along with music, cultural performances, vendors, community organizations, SPD’s Southwest Precinct Picnic (with free treats!), and skateboarding demos/competitions. It’s all happening at Delridge Community Center Park and the adjacent Delridge Skatepark, 11 am-3 pm Saturday, free! From our calendar listing, here are some of the scheduling specifics:
