(Continuing) Sunday, we’ll be working on a walkway extension on Sylvan Way SW between SW Holly St and Sylvan Heights Dr. This work is scheduled to begin as early as 7 AM through 5 PM on both days. Our trucks will be entering and exiting the roadway as we complete this work. Please anticipate slowdowns in the area.

On Sunday, we will be doing some maintenance work on Dumar Way SW and SW Orchard St. We will begin this work as early as 8 AM and conclude by 4 PM. There will be minimal traffic impacts; however, you may see our crews in the area.

TRAFFIC ALERTS: SDOT has two for today:

Saturday afternoon between noon and 5 PM, we’ll be striping travel lanes at 17th and SW Henderson St. We’ll be extending two crosswalks, installing bike markings, and painting barriers in addition to sign work. Please anticipate short-term traffic delays as you navigate the area.

The Ray Skjelbred Trio plays classic hot jazz, swing and blues inspired by music from Chicago in the 1920’s and 30’s. Each musician has many years’ experience and a strong historic sense of the music they set out to perform, as well as a sense of daring to explore new ideas in traditional forms.

As we begin the first weekend of June, here’s what’s happening locally:

TRAFFIC ALERTS: SDOT canceled its plan for West Seattle road work today, but WSDOT is carrying on with its “Revive I-5” lane closures on southbound I-5 between I-90 and the West Seattle Bridge exit.

KIDS’ FISHING DERBY: As previewed here, the West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club invites kids/tweens/teens 14 and under to fish for free in its temporary trout pond at Seacrest, poles and bait provided, 8-11 am (1660 Harbor SW).

LOOP THE ‘LUPE 2022: At Walt Hundley Playfield (34th/Myrtle), the fun begins at 10 am with day-of registration – then the events are: 11 am obstacle-course start, 11:45 am 5K, noon Senior Saunter, 1 pm Youth Dash. And even if you’re not running/walking/etc., you are invited to the barbecue and beer garden – $4 burgers/hot dogs and $5 Georgetown beer, with live music from West Seattle School of Rock. I wanted to invite those parents with teenagers to join an open house for the Skunkworks robotics team. They will take you and train you in hands on engineering. The equipment and mentors to kids ratio is amazing. It’s also pretty much free, as the only cost is a $25 4H cost for the year.

They meet currently 6-8pm Tues/Thursday at the old Beverly Park Elementary School Building (map).

For those who need a place to go a moment for quiet. Forest Lawn Funeral Home will have an open chapel
today through Monday to offer a place to reconcile your thoughts, to sign a guest book for the families and just simply grieve. You are welcome to bring flowers, cards candles… whatever you need or would like to. We will get the items and cards to a local funeral home in Texas. At times like this is hard to know where to turn, what to do and how to react especially when we feel so helpless. Our team is here for you as a community as we all try to make sense of such a horrific day. Our love and strength to all of those in Texas whose lives have been forever changed.

We’ll start near the Chelan 5-way intersection and work our way south, before going west on Highland Park Way SW, then go in reverse to cover eastbound Highland Park Way SW and northbound West Marginal Way SW. Please anticipate delays as we continuously move down the street to complete this work. This work may continue into next weekend.

ONE SEATTLE DAY OF SERVICE: Starting as early as 9 am, thousands of volunteers are working on dozens of projects around the city, including several here in West Seattle. Not registered? Check here for any that still need a hand.

HIGH POINT BEE FESTIVAL: The home of the West Seattle Bee Garden is hosting a low-key festival this year, with events starting at 9:30 am at Commons Park (behind 6400 Sylvan Way SW).

BICYCLE RODEO: 10 am-1 pm at Delridge Community Center (4501 Delridge Way SW), a fun event to help kids learn to bicycle more skillfully and safely.

NEW OUTDOOR MARKET: The Heron’s Nest (4818 Puget Way SW) is hosting a new monthly outdoor market, 10 am-6 pm.

BOWL-A-NOMA: Bowl at West Seattle Bowl (39th/Oregon) to battle melanoma, 10 am-1 pm.

SPORTS: West Seattle High School‘s league-champion baseball team has a 10 am regional playoff game at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue (1790 Richards Road), vs. Stanwood. If the Wildcats win, they’ll play there again later in the day, time and opponent TBD.

FRIENDS OF MORGAN JUNCTION PARK: Help beautify the park (just north of California and Fauntleroy) 11 am-2 pm: “We’ll be primarily weeding and spreading mulch, but there will be other projects for gardeners of all levels.”

WINE TIME: The Viscon Cellars (5910 California SW; WSB sponsor) tasting room is open 1-6 pm, for tasting or by-the-glass/by-the-bottle wine.

POP-UP BOUTIQUE: Vintage clothing today, 1-6 pm, at Brocante Beach House (2622 Alki SW)!

BOWLING FOR EQUALITY: Bowl with HRC Seattle in two waves at West Seattle Bowl (39th/Oregon) – 3-5 pm or 6-8 pm.

TALK WITH YOUR SCHOOL-BOARD REP: First in-person community-conversation meeting with West Seattle/South Park school-board rep Leslie Harris since the pandemic began – 3 pm at West Seattle (Admiral) Library. (2306 42nd SW)

THE GREAT RETURN: 3-8 pm, stop by <strong>Pathfinder K-8 (1901 SW Genesee) for free fun in support of the PTSA’s spring fundraising campaign (you’re welcome whether or not you can donate)

BOUNCES AT OUNCES: Seattle Beer Week festivities continue at Ounces (3809 Delridge Way SW) with Bounce Invasion – a space-themed free bounce house “for kids of all ages.” 3-6 pm.

DESTINATION DELRIDGE: Dine, dance, and support DNDA, starting at 6 pm at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (4408 Delridge Way SW).

EVENING MUSIC @ C & P COFFEE: The Brews Brothers at C & P Coffee Company (5612 California SW; WSB sponsor), 7 pm, no cover.

COVID VACCINATION POP-UP: Noon-5 pm at the Senior Center of West Seattle (4217 SW Oregon), walk-ins welcome.

SOUND TRANSIT WORKSHOP 1-3:30 pm online, the Sound Transit Board’s Expansion Committee has a workshop on the West Seattle/Ballard plan. Open to the public for viewing – info’s in the agenda.

SPORTS: West Seattle High School plays postseason softball at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle), 1:30 pm vs. Bishop Blanchet (and a 5:30 pm game if they win).

LOW-LOW TIDE: Last chance this month! Out to -2.6 feet at 2:56 pm

TASTING: 4-6 pm at West Seattle Liquor and Wine (4714 42nd SW; WSB sponsor), you’re invited to try Argentine wines.

BIKE EVERYWHERE DAY: 4-7 pm, riders are invited to the second session of the drop-in station at the west end of the low bridge, with West Seattle Bike Connections and partners.
