TRAFFIC ALERTS: Scheduled to continue today – southbound lane closures on I-5 between I-90 and Spokane Street, and the eastbound Spokane Street Viaduct closure. Also today, SDOT says:

On Sunday, we’ll install reflectors on West Marginal Way SW and Highland Park Way SW. We’ll begin as early as 5 AM and conclude by 3 PM. We’ll start near the Chelan 5-way intersection and work our way south, before going west on Highland Park Way SW, then go in reverse to cover eastbound Highland Park Way SW and northbound West Marginal Way SW. Please anticipate delays as we continuously move down the street to complete this work. This work may continue into next weekend.

TRAFFIC ALERTS: The eastbound Spokane Street Viaduct is closed; so are lanes on southbound I-5 between I-90 and Spokane Street.

EMERALD WATER ANGLERS SUMMER FEST: Celebrate fishing with vendors, demos, more at Me-Kwa-Mooks Park (4500 Beach Drive SW), presented by Emerald Water Anglers (WSB sponsor) – see our calendar listing for some of the free highlights; only thing to bring money for is lunch (check out what’s cooking).

Welcome to the weekend! Here’s what you should know as we get Saturday started:

ROAD-WORK NOTE: Today SDOT will “be replacing three traffic signs on SW Spokane St in the eastbound direction near 26th Ave SW. We anticipate this work to begin as early as 7 AM and conclude by 5 PM. We’ll need to reduce the two travel lanes to a single lane and there may be delays for people driving.”

WEST SEATTLE COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE DAY: Today’s the day! 9 am-3 pm, ~300 sales all around the peninsula, with some starting earlier and some ending later. WEST SEATTLE SUNDAY: Here’s how May begins

Here’s what’s happening on this first day of May, mostly from the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar:

ROAD-WORK ALERTS: Here’s what SDOT has planned for today:

Between 7 AM to 5 PM, we’re updating curb ramps at 16th Ave SW and SW Barton St in Highland Park. We will be working from the parking lanes, but people driving in the area can expect minor delays.

Additionally, between 7 AM to 5 PM, we’ll be installing traffic signs on southbound SR 99 between S Atlantic S and S Spokane St. During this work, we’ll need to reduce the two travel lanes to a single lane. People driving southbound on SR 99 may experience delays.

Between 7 AM to 3:30 PM, we’ll be installing speed bump markings at 12th Avenue SW and SW Kenyon St. We expect minimal traffic impacts and people driving will be able to continue around the work zone in both directions.

In South Park, the intersection of S Chicago St and 5th Ave S will be closed from 6 AM to 4 PM for upgrading the main water line under the street. This work is part of the South Park Drainage and Roadway Partnership, which is a project we are working together on with Seattle Public Utilities to improve chronic flooding and drainage issues in South Park.

Another long list of events and reminders to start the weekend, mostly from the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar:

ROAD-WORK REMINDERS: If you missed it in our Friday traffic watch, here’s what SDOT plans today:

Between 7 AM to 5 PM, we’re updating curb ramps at 16th Ave SW and SW Barton St in Highland Park. We will be working from the parking lanes, but people driving in the area can expect minor delays.

Additionally, between 7 AM to 5 PM, we’ll be installing traffic signs on southbound SR 99 between S Atlantic S and S Spokane St. During this work, we’ll need to reduce the two travel lanes to a single lane. People driving southbound on SR 99 may experience delays.

In South Park, the intersection of S Chicago St and 5th Ave S will be closed from 6 AM to 4 PM for upgrading the main water line under the street. This work is part of the South Park Drainage and Roadway Partnership, which is a project we are working together on with Seattle Public Utilities to improve chronic flooding and drainage issues in South Park.

And a reminder that repairs were finished early on the Spokane Street ramp to NB 99, so it’s open again.

HIGHLAND PARK WAY CLEANUP: Join Adopt-A-Street volunteer Dustin at 9 am – our calendar listing explains the plan/location.

GUIDED HIKE: Meet in the upper north lot of Riverview Playfield (7224 12th SW) at 10 am for this hike – details in our calendar listing,

HEALTHY KIDS DAY: The fun, free, activities-laden event at the West Seattle YMCA, 10 am-1 pm – all welcome, membership NOT required. (3622 SW Snoqualmie).

INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE DAY: Paper Boat Booksellers (6040 California SW) is open 10 am-6 pm and celebrating all day long, with guest authors during Family Reading Time hosted in the nearby HeartBeet Event Space at 11 am, and bonus fun at the shop.

DRUG TAKE-BACK DAY: 10 am-2 pm, bring your expired/not-needed prescription to the lot outside the Southwest Precinct (2300 SW Webster), 10 am-2 pm, for safe, no-questions-asked disposal.

SCHOOL GIVE-AND-TAKE RUMMAGE SALE: The Highland Park Elementary PTA hosting the sale on the school’s north side blacktop – drop off donations at 9 am, shop (or take what you need) 10 am-2 pm. (1012 SW Trenton)

SPORTS: Two baseball games – the West Seattle HS plays Blaine at 10 am at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle), and then Chief Sealth IHS plays the same opponent, same field, at 12:30 pm.
