SPORTS: West Seattle High School’s volleyball victory at district tournament means trip to state

9:49 PM: Five nights after taking second place in the Metro League championships, the West Seattle High School volleyball team scored a shutout win in their first district-tournament match tonight. Playing at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, the Wildcats beat Bellevue 3-0. Lake Washington is also where WSHS will face the host team at 9 am Saturday (November 11th) in the district semifinals. If we’re reading the bracket correctly, tonight’s victory has already guaranteed them a berth at the state tournament.

9:58 PM: Head coach Scott Behrbaum confirms his team has earned a trip to state – that’ll be November 17-18 in Yakima.

UPDATE: Crash on westbound bridge

7:55 PM: Thanks for the tip. There’s a multi-vehicle collision on the westbound West Seattle Bridge near the Admiral exit. Our tipster reports up to five vehicles involved. (It’s out of camera range on SDOT’s live feed, but you can see brake lights activating just past the crest.)

8:20 PM: Officers have just told dispatch that the bridge is “back open again.” We’re checking with SFD about injuries, if any.

10:10 PM: No injuries reported, according to SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo, who says a 76-year-old woman was evaluated at the scene just to be sure.

West Seattle Water Taxi adds Friday pm service for Sounders FC playoff match

|    Comments Off on West Seattle Water Taxi adds Friday pm service for Sounders FC playoff match
 |   King County Water Taxi | West Seattle news

Though the West Seattle Water Taxi was originally scheduled to be out of service tomorrow for the Veterans Day observation, Metro has added late afternoon and evening runs so Sounders FC fans can get to and from the playoff match vs. Dallas. The schedule can be found here – it starts with a 4:30 pm trip from West Seattle, and ends with a 10:45!pm trip from downtown. No shuttle bus, though, so you have to find another way to and from Seacrest. And Metro is still planning to keep the Water Taxi (and shuttles) entirely out of service on Saturday.

WEST SEATTLE ART: Highland Park’s big blue bird comes home to roost

(WSB photos)

11:56 AM: It’s installation day for “Where’s the Party? Elevating Nature and Resilience,” the 17-foot-tall Steller’s Jay that’s going up on the southwest corner of Highland Park Way/Holden as the public-art component of SDOT’s safety project at the intersection. Artist Matthew Mazzotta created the big bird, as we first reported a year ago.

Crews will be working on it for another two hours or so; for safety’s sake, spectators are asked to stay away until they’re done (we’ll update). Reminder that next Tuesday, you’ll get a chance to meet the artist – gather at 4 pm November 14th at the corner, and then everyone will walk south to Highland Park Corner Store to chat. The $120,000 project is funded by the longrunning “1 Percent for Art” program, and took wing after three other concepts presented by the city drew tepid community reaction.

2 PM: Installation complete, crew packing up.

3:52 PM: Adding Scott Bessho‘s photo of a view from behind:

CRIME WATCH FOLLOWUP: Arbor Heights yard-standoff suspect charged

(Reader photo, October 20th)

The man arrested after a standoff in an Arbor Heights yard has pleaded not guilty to two felony charges filed against him. 41-year-old Kenan D. Brown drove a stolen car into a tree in the 10200 block of 31st SW on October 20th but wouldn’t get out of the car, in which police noted he had a gun and a reportedly “aggressive” dog. Officers eventually got the gun and dog out, then took Brown into custody and to jail. The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office subsequently charged Brown with first-degree unlawful gun possession – since he’s a convicted felon already – and “physical control while under the influence,” a type of DUI charge resulting from suspicion that he was under the influence of marijuana at the time. (The car had been stolen in Tacoma, and had a plate stolen in Auburn.) Court documents say he has 20 convictions on his record dating back to age 17. At his arraignment, King County Superior Court Judge Johanna Bender reduced his bail from $75,000 to $15,000, and ordered that if he does make bail, he needs to be on electronic home monitoring while awaiting trial. He’s still in jail tonight, in lieu of $30,000 total bail, also counting $15,000 for another case in which he is charged but not yet tried.

WEST SEATTLE COYOTES: 2 more sightings

Two more West Seattle coyote sightings to share. First, one texted to us tonight: “Wanted to report a coyote sighting in North Admiral going east at SW Walker St toward 41st Ave SW.” Second, one that was sent by Martine on Halloween night:

I live on 34th Ave SW, between Andover and Charlestown, and this morning I had an encounter with what I think was a coyote. It was 7am and I was walking my dog. The coyote was only 6 feet away, not scared at all, and looked incredibly healthy. He did not run when I tried to scare it away and stayed within my eye-sight until I decided to just go back home and walk my dog later. It was a little unnerving.

As always, we want to note that we publish these sightings for awareness, not alarm, and for education: Here’s the state’s advice on do’s and don’t’s for coexisting with coyotes. (For previous sightings, click on the coverage-category link – “coyotes” – under the headline above and scroll through our archive.)

THANKSGIVING: West Seattle Eagles’ free dinner

In addition to The Hall at Fauntleroy, the West Seattle Eagles usually offer a free community Thanksgiving dinner, and they’ve sent word it’s happening again this year. All are welcome at their HQ at 4426 California SW in The Junction, 2-5 pm on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 23). They promise a “full, traditional meal,” all ages welcome, just show up.

ELECTION 2023: Results update is in, hampered by powder scare

The second set of King County general-election results is in – but it didn’t add much to the totals in our local races; the elections team lost time today because of a powder scare – here’s how they explained it:

This morning, King County Elections received a piece of mail that contained white powder. The envelope was immediately isolated, the facility evacuated, and 911 was called. Law enforcement and HAZMAT teams arrived quickly to assess the situation.

The piece of concerning mail arrived in our mailroom, on the first floor, in our administrative suite. All ballots remained secured on the ballot processing floor and were monitored by both security cameras and livestreamed webcams viewable on the King County Elections website.

This situation kept Elections staff out of the building and away from processing ballots for approximately three hours. After the mailroom was cleared and cleaned by HAZMAT, staff returned to work and processing resumed for the day.

In all, the new results only add 20,000 ballots countywide, only several hundred in City Council District 1, which is at the same margin as last night:

SEATTLE CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 1
Maren Costa – 7,265 – 40.91%
Rob Saka – 10,393 – 58.53%

For the closest race in our area, County Council District 8, close to 2,000 more ballots have been counted, and the gap is wider than last night, more than a point and a half:

KING COUNTY COUNCIL DISTRICT 8
Teresa Mosqueda – 17,224 – 50.68%
Sofia Aragon – 16,612 – 48.88%

Find the full set of updated results here. Next update is due out by 4 pm tomorrow.

FAUNTLEROY SALMON: ‘Open creek’ set for Sunday

Tom Trulin‘s photo shows the first spawner of the season in Fauntleroy Creek. At least 22 more have followed, so with that, and a adequate supply of volunteers, the first “open creek” of the season will happen Sunday (November 12). Here’s the invitation, sent by Judy Pickens of the Fauntleroy Watershed Council:

Spawners in Fauntleroy Creek – and the public is invited

As of late Tuesday, salmon watchers on Fauntleroy Creek had tallied 23 vigorous coho spawners. The first arrived on Saturday and more have followed daily. With rain and 11-foot tides in the offing, the Fauntleroy Watershed Council has scheduled an all-ages open creek on Sunday, 1:00-3:00 pm. Dress for the weather and make your way to the fish ladder viewpoint at SW Director and upper Fauntleroy Way SW. A volunteer will invite you down to creek level to check out the habitat, ask questions, and maybe see spawners. Children should bring a parent and dogs should be on leash.

That’s across the street (and up the embankment) from the entrance to the Fauntleroy ferry dock.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Stolen boat; car-theft attempt; suspected prowler

Three reader reports in West Seattle Crime Watch:

STOLEN BOAT: The report and photo are from Lea:

Stolen boat and trailer out of West Seattle on October 11th.

Seattle police report number 23-294888

The trailer: License plate AT0056 with brown color, fiberglass boat on top

ATTEMPTED CAR THEFT: Matthew reports this happened Monday night:

Unfortunately someone tried to steal my 2013 Kia Rio. It was parked on the street in front of my house on 34th and Manning. The lock was pulled out of the driver’s side, but I had a club on the wheel, so I think they thought it was more trouble than it was worth. I had nothing in the car to steal, so nothing seemed missing. So frustrating to have this happen, but I’m glad I still have my car!

SUSPECTED PROWLER: Dianne reports this happened Tuesday afternoon: “About 3:19 pm, our neighbor saw a possible prowler coming down our private drive (near 31st/Findlay), which has no outlet. We live on a dead-end street down a private drive. My next-door neighbor texted us when she saw him walk down our easement. He had a duffle bag and a plastic bag full of goods.”
